This Essex-based brand was founded in 1973, and still has a small factory in the county, continuing to produce some of the best mid-range turntables money can buy. The Planar, which comes in numbers from 1 to 10 (we're talking thousands of pounds for the latter), is an iconic range of turntables. The AT-LP140XP is a high-end turntable, designed for DJs and avid music listeners alike. The AT-LP140XP features a new DC servo direct-drive motor for optimised audio performance. It also features adjustable dynamic anti-skate control and a dedicated phone-level output. Install the dust cover hinges into the slots on the dust cover, but do not install the dust cover onto the turntable at this time. Set aside.

Almost all DJ turntables are now direct-drive models, meaning they have better pitch stability and more power than the cheap belt-drive models which used to be common entry-level options. More expensive options look very similar to cheaper models, which means it’s sometimes not obvious what more you’re getting for your money. Platter: This is usually a metal or plastic plate covered by a rubber mat (which prevents scratching the disc). The record is placed on a rod at the plate's centre. Steel plates are cheaper than aluminium, but the latter provides more stability. The platter is rotated by a drive system, either a belt drive or direct drive. Experts say belt drives offer better sound quality (because there's less noise from the motor). Direct drive systems are favoured by DJs because the turntable's speed is less likely to be altered by the DJ's hand. As David Richard writes on his r ecord player blog: "Quality direct drive players are more expensive. Cheap ones are generally useless." Both the AT-LP120-USB and AT-LP140XP turntables use a detachable AC power cord. AC to DC conversion is done inside the turntable. The AT-LP120XUSB turntable uses an AC adapter that handles AC/DC conversion outside the turntable, reducing noise in the signal chain.

Audio-Technica AT-LP140XP

The AT-LP140XP also has three pitch ranges: +/-8%, +/-16% and +/- 24%. This eclipses both the AT-LP120-USB and AT-LP120XUSB, which both only come with two pitch ranges (+/-10% and +/- 20% for the AT-LP120-USB and +/-8% and +/-16% for the AT-LP120XUSB).

If an item can not be repaired, a similar alternative product or cash discount (as defined in this policy) will be offered The 140 is a mature 120. Grown up, rather serious and better built but it retains its DJ aspirations. SOUND QUALITY The plastic surface is slightly rounded on the sides, which feels very comfortable when mixing. At 1.8 cm, the central spindle is significantly higher than the Technics SL-120 MK2 (1.4 cm) and tapers to a point. DJs who like to put their hands on the spindle when slowing down the record will be happy. The Pitch Fader The Audio-Technica AT-LP140XP, however, allows you to (for example) swap out the ATN-XP3 stylus for the ATN-XP5 or ATN-XP7. And the more you upgrade, the more you’ll notice the sound quality getting more clear, open, and perhaps even improving the lower end (bass) in your music. The PLX-500 is the budget model in Pioneer’s small range, coming in at half the price of the premium model and offering a more basic spec aimed at home DJs rather than professional club use. Switching the 1000’s metal construction for a more basic plastic chassis, the 500 isn’t as rugged and it’s missing some of the features of the top model, like adjustable pitch range. However, it uses the same motor, so it’s fundamentally very close in terms of feel and sound where it matters. It also adds some handy features not found on the top model, such as a USB output.

Tech spec

Verdict: More suited to casual than audiophile listening, and based on the Technics SL-1200 design, the AT-LP140XP benefits from a heavy chassis, strong bass performance and DJ-friendly direct-drive mechanism.

Now, just pop out the ATN-XP3 stylus and put in a new one. Or, better yet, install the ATN-XP5 stylus or ATN-XP7 stylus for even better quality sound. The AT-LP140XP is a fully manual turntable. Unlike the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X (which I reviewed here), which is a fully automatic record player, the AT-LP140XP has no automatic mechanism built inside it. To avoid the effects of vibrations and acoustic sound pressure, do not position the turntable on top of or near any loudspeakers.A cover is included, but it’s worth removing it during play to avoid any additional vibration, and loosely cover the turntable when not in use. There’s not a lot I don’t love about this record player, but I will say that there are some features you might expect to get here that aren’t included.

Both the ATLP120USB and AT-LP140XP are aimed at the DJ community. Despite that fact, the 120 has always been a part of audiophile demo lists. I expect the 140 to occupy the same lists, hence the reason for this review. Please note that this extended warranty is currently only available on products sold within the UK, EU or EEA, and is subject to the terms and conditions as detailed on the extended warranty certificate provided. With a starting torque of 2.2 kgf.cm, the AT-LP140XP turntable has the highest torque motor of the three. It is a professional-quality turntable designed for commercial use, but the well-damped chassis and platter make it suitable for home use as well. This motor features a reversible direction and offers three pitch adjustment ranges, +/-8%, +/-16% and +/- 24%. Install the dust cover hinges into the slots on the dust cover, but do not install the dust cover onto the turntable at this time. Set this aside for later. You should get an instant answer on whether your application has been successful, though in some rare cases Klarna or V12 may need to look at the application in more detail. As they're built for DJs, if you're simply playing music, you can probably find something of similar sound quality, if not better, at a lower price. As The Audiophile Man writes, DJ accessories can hinder sound quality, because the features "inject a measure of noise into the signal." It boils down to a question of need: "What the hi-fi gods give with one hand, they take away with another." That means that whether you’re placing the tonearm and stylus into the record groove to play a record or lifting the tonearm off the record once the final song finishes and returning it to its rest—you will be fully responsible for these tasks.
