Bound by destiny yet separated by mysterious forces, childhood friends Link and Zelda become tangled in a legendary conflict spanning the surface and sky. Among other things, a membership entitles you to the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System apps, which each house dozens of games within them. I'm part of the minority who believes that the best way to know a game is to know its roots, so I vote for the original LOZ.

I think the obvious answer to me is Ocarina of Time, which has become the core of the series' timeline, and introduces lore and franchise-spanning concepts in a very appealing way. The possibility of being able to play a select variety of NES and SNES games is a neat feature available to those subscribed to Online and includes both Zelda titles on the NES.

While there are many who believe that the best place to start with any franchise is right at the beginning, there’s no denying that the NES iterations of Zelda have aged considerably in the decades following their respective releases. One of the Switch launch games and still one of its all-time best-sellers, Breath of the Wild reinvented The Legend of Zelda for a modern age and inspired a parade of imitators. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was the latest console Zelda game before Breath of the Wild changed the paradigm, and its somewhat rigid adherence to structure is widely seen as a major reason why BotW broke so heavily from the formula. Robster64 I think OoT really stands out for being able to express a wide breadth of mood - there are moments of cheerfulness, joy, humor, and hope mixed in episodes of melancholy, despair, fear, and even horror. Edit: I guess to elaborate further, there are probably a handful of games that most people probably shouldn't start with, namely, the NES games and the wonky DS entries.

The indie game Crypt of the Necrodancer got a Zelda-themed semi-sequel with Cadence of Hyrule, which took the basic rhythm combat mechanics and mapped them into the world (and musical selections) of the Zelda series. In a world fueled by your imagination, you’ll need to harness the power of Link’s new abilities to fight back against the malevolent forces that threaten the kingdom.

Meanwhile, the latest entry, Breath of the Wild, is such a divergence for the franchise that it doesn't really serve as an introduction to it, even if inevitably that's what it's become to many young gamers. From teasers, we've seen that the Master Sword has been damaged in some way and we've also seen Link wearing different clothing and falling through the clouds.

Also an easy to understand story, and all games afterwards have references to that game so it’s kinda a must to play it as one of the first Zelda’s.It’s like a mountain-sized “choose your own adventure” book, with an endless amount of layers to it. Get a day one ambassador 3DS (for Minish Cap, and with some luck the DSi Four Swords), and get al the Zelda you can get on it, and unplug from the internet again so no one can tell you where to start.

Many modern favorites such as Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight and Infernax were inspired by Zelda II, I doubt they were drawing from a garbage source material.Zelda II is a unique entry into an early successful series that really had no expectations or restrictions holding it back, which is why it experimented with a different style of gameplay (aka the side-scroller).
