We don’t even have a firm grasp on what Amren is, exactly, or at least what she used to be before the Cauldron remade her as a High Fae, and we have little knowledge of her history. Yet, she’s taken to her life in the Night Court, serving as Rhys’s second in command, and building a real – and apparently quite sexual -relationship with Summer Court resident Varian, who seems to basically be her live-in boyfriend at this point. Emerie and Gwyn are incredible characters, each with their own vibrant personalities, skills and trauma they are learning to cope with. Together with Nesta, the three women learn how to help themselves, and create a found-family that will definitely pull on your heartstrings. Nesta’s point of view was easily my favourite, and her attitude towards her two friends was heart-warming to read.

It does setup Cassian and Nesta’s “interactions” a little bit, and also notes a change in scenery for where the group meets in ACOSF. But otherwise, it’s a puff piece with absolutely no plot. Chapter Nineteen continues the makeout scene from chapter eighteen. They do some love stuff but later Nesta sees Cassian’s face and leaves. Before leaving, she doesn’t forget to leave a snide remark. The story takes places during the Winter Solstice, which is celebrated basically like Christmas without Christmas, cause you know it’s a fantasy world. Mor doesn’t think Vallahan is interested in peace or allying with the Night Court. At this, Cassian thinks, “Now, even with Hybern’s king dead, its people remained angry. An army might be raised again in Hybern.
