Hot on the heels of Talisker Storm in early 2013 comes Talisker's Port Ruighe, pronounced 'Port Ree'. In mixed company, the dram can be overpowered by more heavily peated single malts such as Laphroaig or Lagavulin. Amoroso sherry is a style made by adding some Pedro Xerminez to Oloroso sherry . This is a dark full bodied style that normally has notes of dried fruit, caramel, and nuts. Oloroso is aged at a higher proof to keep flor from forming. Flor is a layer of yeast that can form during fermentation and aging. Oloroso has a high glycerol content that allows it to be perceived as sweeter, even though it is naturally dry.

Not to be confused with the far more expensive Diageo Special Edition Releases, Diageo’s Distillers Edition whiskies are more accessible (read: affordable) but also released on a (mostly) annual basis. While normally we see these a bit randomly, this year we were fortunate to receive the full collection of 2021 Distillers Editions, six whiskies in total from some of the biggest names in Scotch — each of which was sent with a companion candle created with the respective whisky. It's much better than I remember the distillery edition from 2015, contrary to that edition the sweetness provided by the Amoroso sherry casks is well integrated now. This one scores a solid 88, the old one 86 points. The flagship release from Talisker is their 10-year-old single malt. Talisker 10 is bottled at an endearingly quirky 45.8% ABV (91.6 proof). To celebrate the Talisker distillery’s 175th anniversary in 2005, a no age statement commemorative single malt bottling was released. Two years later in 2007, Talisker 18 year old won ‘Best Single Malt In The World 2007’ at the World Whiskies Awards. Since 2008, the Talisker range has vastly expanded with a no age statement quartet and even a 40 year old expression. Talisker is now one of Diageo’s most distinguished single malt brands.

I love the Talisker DE. In addition to being delicious, it’s one of those whiskies to which I attach a specific memory of a specific night: sitting around a wood fire blazing on my hearth, infant firstborn on my lap, BS’ing with some family late into the night on a cold fall evening right after I finished renovating my basement into the “medieval Irish pub” in 2011. This beautifully orchestrated variation of Talisker has a lingering finish which cannot outstay its welcome.
