While there’s no one-size-fits-all when buying a new TV, we often find that 55-inch screens are an excellent fit for many living rooms – giving you immersive viewing experiences for family movie nights, catching up with your latest streaming obsession after the kids have gone to bed or hosting a gathering with friends to watch sports. The main reason the S95C is so svelte is down to the Samsung One Connect Box. Unlike the S95B with its internal cable connections, HDMI cables and other connections are housed in a separate media receiver for the S95C. This not only helps declutter your cables, it shaves the dimensions of the S95C.

The S95B provides four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports, one of which is an eARC port. The chief benefit of those advanced HDMI ports is for those looking to connect a next-gen game console like an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 or, for hard-core gaming enthusiasts, a high-end PC armed with an advanced graphics card. Console and PC gamers can expect low input lag with support for variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120Hz at 4K resolution. Riley Young/Digital Trends Smart features are provided courtesy of Samsung’s latest Tizen OS, and offer the most comprehensive streaming app support in town. The only notable absentee is the Freeview Play app that collates the catch up services of the UK’s main terrestrial broadcasters into a handy umbrella interface. All of those broadcasters’ catch up apps are provided individually, though. Our initial demo of the Sony A95L was a bit brief, but our second one proved much more in-depth. Placed side-by-side with the Samsung S95C (and LG G3), the Sony looked the clear winner in terms of picture quality. It's worth nothing this wasn't under proper testing conditions. But we were still seriously impressed by the Sony.

While it was the S95B’s brightness and local contrast that first caught my eye, it didn’t take long to realise that actually its main attraction is its colour performance. Scenes in HDR films I’ve seen dozens if not hundreds of times suddenly appeared with depths and vibrant ranges of colour that I’ve never seen on an OLED-based TV before. Bright yellows and reds, in particular, pop off the screen with ferocious intensity compared with screens that have to use a white element in their colour make up.

Basically Samsung, as usual, seems more prepared to take the brakes off with its default Standard picture preset than most rival brands (with the possible exception of Philips). Perhaps especially so with the S95B, given that the company is no doubt keen to push the benefits of its new take on OLED technology since its great rival LG has dominated the OLED space for so long.

There’s also support for ‘Multiview’ picture in picture, no less than three built-in voice assistants (Samsung’s Bixby, Google Assistant and Alexa), a new Video Calling app (though you’ll need an optional extra external camera to use this), and Samsung’s increasingly curated and useful ‘TV Plus’ roster of streamed TV channels. If you’re in the market this year for a TV under 55 inches or above 65 inches, the Samsung QN90B Neo QLED has you covered. An immersive TV surround sound experience that puts you in the heart of the action. Your TV uses its eight speakers built-in to the four sides of the TV to make the sound follow the action on screen. Hear a car zoom along your screen, the crowd cheer all around you, or the dialogue come from where the character is standing.
