Description

This isn’t on the official list, but we think it’s a modern wonder. The massive faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln make up Mount Rushmore. It’s a feat of engineering as each face is about 60 feet high. These Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were originally chosen by Hellenic travelers passing through Persian, Babylonian, and Egyptian lands. They made careful note of these structures in travel guides, artwork, and poems. Although lists of wonders were created as early as the fifth century B.C.E., the most famous example was developed by the second-century Greek writer Antipater of Sidon, who celebrated these feats of human ability through poetry. Constructed between 447 BC and 432 BC, the Parthenon replaced an earlier temple that had been destroyed by invading Persians. Its primary purpose was to house an enormous statue of Athena Parthenos, a magnificent work of art made of ivory, silver, and gold. Although the statue was looted and destroyed centuries ago, the Parthenon continues to captivate and inspire all who gaze upon its grandeur. The Great Wall is not only a remarkable engineering feat, but it also serves as a cultural and historical icon of China.

As one of the man made wonders of the world, Angkor Wat is a massive temple complex that encompasses the ruins of several capitals of the Khmer Empire, spanning from the 9th to the 15th century AD.Tallest structure in the world from 1931 to 1954; tallest freestanding structure in the world from 1931 to 1967; tallest building in the world from 1931 to 1970; first building with 100+ stories a b Hereward Carrington (1880–1958). [2] It is unlikely that any of these lists actually originated in the Middle Ages since the concept of a "Middle Age" did not become popular until at least the 16th century and the word " medieval" was not invented until the Enlightenment era. Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable refers to them as "later list[s]", [3] suggesting the lists were created after the Middle Ages.

Its ruin by Herostratus and the ravages of time have obliterated all but a few remains of the grand temple. Modern 7 World Wonders are amazing constructions created by people and selected by the American Society of Civil Engineers. You can read a short article about these seven world wonders here. The intensity of northern lights increases as you head north towards the magnetic pole in the Arctic. Unfortunately, the northern lights appear only randomly, making it a challenge for travelers to see while on a short trip. They are more often experienced by locals who live in these northern regions. Panama Canal, 51-mile (82km) artificial waterway crossing the Isthmus of Panama and connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, completed in 1914 Ely Cathedral, a (currently Anglican) cathedral originally built in the 11th century in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England. One among the many wonders of the Pyramid is the mortar that was used to adhere the stones together. Even today, archeologists and scientists cannot replicate the mortar, which was stronger than the stones themselves. 12. The Blue Mosque, Turkey Source: Pedro Szekely/Wikimedia Commons

This ancient lighthouse, considered a technical masterpiece that served as the model for all lighthouses that followed, was constructed on Pharos, an island in the harbor of Alexandria in Egypt, known as Kemet by its ancient citizens. It was completed between 285 and 247 B.C.E.The precise date of origin of the Mohenjo-Daro civilization is yet to be confirmed. However, there is a vague timeline that stretches its age as being 5000 to 8000 years old, positioning it as one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Hanging Gardens of Babylon, in Babylon, near present-day Hillah, Babil province, Iraq; or Nineveh, Mosul, Nineveh Governorate, Iraq. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus: This Greek temple was dedicated to the goddess Artemis. It was located in the ancient Greek city of Ephesus.

Olympus Mons, an enormous shield volcano on Mars and the tallest planetary mountain in the Solar System I have seen the walls and Hanging Gardens of ancient Babylon, the statue of Olympian Zeus, the Colossus of Rhodes, the mighty work of the high Pyramids and the tomb of Mausolus. But when I saw the temple at Ephesus rising to the clouds, all these other wonders were put in the shade.” When thinking of some of the most impressive natural landscapes in the world, it is impossible not to think of Mount Everest. Mount Everest is known as the tallest peak on Earth and measures 8,848.86 meters tall. Generally, people think of it as the tallest mountain in the world, but that isn’t quite accurate. Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, is actually a taller mountain, but much of it is underwater, and thus it does not have the tallest peak ‘above sea level.’ This is why Everest is generally considered to be the overall tallest, as it is much easier to see and comprehend the sheer size of the mountain and its summit. Teotihuacan, a grand and flourishing metropolis that rose in the valley of Mexico during the 2nd century BC, remains one of the most awe-inspiring man made wonders of the world. The civilization that built this great city was responsible for the construction of the colossal step pyramids, including the famous Pyramid of the Sun, which was completed around 100 AD. Standing tall at an impressive height of 246 feet, it was not only the largest building in Teotihuacan but also one of the most significant structures in Mesoamerica.

Generally, the northern lights can be seen more clearly and frequently closer to the Arctic Circle. Polar regions have some of the most phenomenal displays, especially as light pollution from cities is virtually nonexistent there. However, the aurora can be seen in several countries including the US state of Alaska, large sections of northern Canada, as well as Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. While these constructions are stunning achievements of ancient engineerning, they don't include marvels from many of the ancient civilizations of Africa, Europe, and Asia, and the Americas, which were unknown to the Hellenic peoples. The list of "Seven Wonders of the Underwater World" was drawn up by CEDAM International, an American-based non-profit group for divers that is dedicated to ocean preservation and research. In 1989, CEDAM brought together a panel of marine scientists, including Eugenie Clark, to choose underwater areas which they considered worthy of protection. The results were announced at The National Aquarium in Washington, D.C., by actor Lloyd Bridges, star of TV's Sea Hunt: [21] Although these Seven Wonders are still celebrated today, they show the fleeting nature of even the grandest physical achievements—nature, human behavior, and the passage of time have destroyed all but one.
