There are very few bands out there who can manage to play Halloween-themed shows yet still avoid the novelty tag and play music any other time of the year. Arguably there are just three that come to mind: The Misfits, The Cramps, and, of course, The Damned. a b c Lanham, Tom (28 April 2023). "Dave Vanian Talks About The Damned's New Album Darkadelic". Paste . Retrieved 20 June 2023. As musicians The Damned are now possibly at their peak, and this is shown by two fine renditions of classic songs, The Doors’ People Are Strange and Bauhaus’ Bela Lugosi’s Dead which creeps out in a medley in the middle of Neat Neat Neat.a b Sullivan, Damian (26 October 2022). "Review: The Damned – Night of a Thousand Vampires (2022)". Maximum Volume Music . Retrieved 20 June 2023.

And then it dawns on me that I have the answer to my earlier question about Philippa, the art director and the other two thousand who have travelled from far and wide. It’s so clear, He is The Fanatic, and they are His Followers. Songs performed on the night but not included on the album and in the film are " New Rose", " Smash It Up", " Nasty", and " Shadow of Love". [15] Concert film [ edit ]Inside the Palladium as the band begins to play, the film shifts to colour, tinted with cool blue and disquieting green lighting, as if you might be watching a painstakingly hand-coloured print of Louis Feuillade’s Les Vampires (1915-1916). A camera is positioned to capture a long shot of the stage, a quite literal horror tableau vivant if you were to press pause. With Pinch positioned above the stage on drums, I’ve got to imagine Gooch, Vanian, and the rest of The Damned were thinking specifically about those silent film tableaus created by directors like F.W. Murnau. But A Night Of A Thousand Vampires couldn’t be mistaken for silent cinema: The Damned fill the Palladium with sounds to wake the dead. New Noise Magazine described the album as a "remarkable set" that includes much of the Damned's "darker, goth material." They felt that the band is "still playing at their best," and that the addition of strings and trumpet "just adds to the ghoulish atmosphere." Besides some of the band's own songs, they highlighted a cover of the Doors' " People Are Strange" and an "inspired medley" of " Neat Neat Neat" and Bauhaus' " Bela Lugosi's Dead." [1] It’s an absolute treat. The band’s set has been arranged in two halves with an interval. The first half in my mind, leans towards the 80s post-punk Goth side of the band. It climaxes in a wonderful version of Eloise in which the mini orchestra conducted by a Vanian, completely in his element, really comes into its own. And draws to a close with the magnificent Curtain Call in its full 18 minute splendour. CD/1- Blu-ray set and various two- LP gatefolds. [8] The film premiered as part of FrightFest Halloween on 27 October 2022 at Cineworld Leicester Square in London. [9] It was recorded and filmed for a special one-off musical and theatrical performance billed as A Night of a Thousand Vampires at the London Palladium on 28 October 2019. [1] Directed by Martin Gooch, the concert film features the cast of The Circus of Horrors performing alongside the Damned. [10] The live show marked the final gig of drummer Andrew 'Pinch' Pinching after 20 years with the band. [11] Circus of Horrors has warmed up the crowd. And now behind, dominating the proceedings, is an enormous screen running a classic Hammer clip of a fanged Christopher Lee peering through ruined cathedral columns, with a blood-red colour wash.

On October 28th, 2019, The Damned took the stage at London’s prestigious Palladium Theatre for a very special immersive musical and theatrical experience – performing songs of their 40-year rich catalogue. A true event from showmen supreme, it was a historic night in the history of a storied band and a special evening for fans and band alike. It was also a fond farewell for drummer Pinch, his final gig with his compadres after 20 years. On October 28, 2019, the legendary goth punk band The Damned played a Halloween themed show at London’s legendary Palladium Theatre. Billed as A NIGHT OF A THOUSAND VAMPIRES, the band churned through a remarkable set that was heavy on some of their darker, goth material naturally. For the uninitiated, the Hammer film company started life in 1935 just a few minutes walk away in nearby Regent Street. By the 1950s it had relocated to the legendary Hammer House, 113-117 Wardour Street. And its name became synonymous with a golden age in British Cinema that gave us one of cinema’s great pairings – Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

Reviews

A Night Of A Thousand Vampires` was a well thought out and executed occasion and watching this show was a totally immersive experience both visually and aurally and really made me feel saddened that i`d not actually attended the event.

Chart performance [ edit ] Chart performance of Blu-ray edition of A Night of a Thousand Vampires: Live in London Chart (2022) a b Purdie, Iain (30 October 2022). "DVD Review: A Night of A Thousand Vampires – Live in London (The Damned)". The Moshville Times . Retrieved 20 June 2023. The band has asked everyone to help them set a Guinness World Record for having the most vampires assembled in one place. And virtually everyone is in costume. It also becomes apparent that many, if not most people have travelled great distances for A Night of a Thousand Vampires in this Grade 2 listed theatre in London’s West End.

As someone who’s not familiar with The Damned’s musical output, this is a show I would have paid to see when it was on and left feeling that I’d been thoroughly entertained for the evening. It’s not a gig, it’s a spectacle and it’s been captured very well indeed for this release. Alan is wearing hooded cape. His first Damned gig was at The Barrowlands in 1988. He and Lorna, his gothic vampiress have just arrived from Glasgow. Adrian and Lara from York are dressed as The Count and Bride of Dracula. They first saw the band in Belfast in 1987. Starting over 25 years ago, Carl and Sarah from Newcastle have seen the band “Over fifty times”. While the fanged Ann and Tina just down from Wakefield, say they love “All of them”, when I ask for their favourite Damned album.
