I found the 7 characters rotating points of views and overlapping timelines to be tedious and repetitive, and it interrupted the natural flow of allowing the plot to move forward. But soon they realise the problems in Royalty Protection are just the beginning as a renegade organisation has the security of the country – and the Crown – in its sights .

The struggles of his mother to finance Harry’s upbringing (his father is dead) are particularly engrossing, and the intrigue of Harry’s father’s circumstances add an element of suspense to this entertaining novel, which ends with a bombshell of a cliffhanger! Only Time Will Tell follows Harry from the horrors of the Great War to the Second World War, when Harry must decide between a place at Oxford or joining the fight against Hitler.

If I had to sum up my opinion of this book in one sentence, it would be "Honey, could you pass me the Excedrin? Especially the beginning of this historical family saga had me intrigued because it tells enchantingly about these three boys and their struggles on a boarding school. Maisie knows the truth about Harry's parentage, and a few people know the truth about Arthur Clifton's death, but no one tells Harry anything. Percy scored 56 per cent and was offered a place for the Michaelmas term, which delighted his father and was met with incredulity by the Frob.

Chief Superintendent William Warwick and his trusty comrade Inspector Ross Hogan, seasoned pros in guiding prized Crown Jewels through the labyrinth of London, face a conundrum. If Mr Holcombe kept his mouth shut and the ganger didn’t report me to the headmaster, I could go for days without being found out, and as long as I avoided the coal barges and was standing by the school gate at four o’clock every afternoon, my mother would never be any the wiser.

The story revolves around the main character Harry Clifton, a boy growing up in the backdrop of docks in Bristol at the start of the 20th century. But past encounters with an ex are never far away, and when Harry befriends Giles Barrington, his meddlesome, fraudulent father, Hugo, does his best to deny what happened between Harry’s mother and himself all those years ago. In the Clifton Chronicles, Jeffrey Archer explores themes of love, loss and betrayal as he takes the reader on an exhilarating journey from the back alleys of Bristol to the teeming streets of New York City and the Gulags of Stalinist Russia.

He is the only author ever to have been a number one bestseller in fiction (nineteen times), short stories (four times) and non-fiction (The Prison Diaries). However, as my reading progressed the story became more and more redundant and predictable, and especially towards the end it felt like Jeffrey Archer included historical aspects to the story just for the sake of accentuating the history that was going on simultaneously to the characters' lives. However, they were difficult enough for me to feel confident that his lordship would not let me down.

Make no mistake, this is not a Pulitzer, but it is good, solid storytelling, with bold characters, a world wide setting, and a story that has enough twists, turns, and sneaky heart-stoppers to definitely merit the label "page turner. The writing itself is concise and to the point and without too much of a descriptive slant, but it’s a clever structure and the likeable characters combined with steadily building tension, kept me turning the pages.I was good at making up stories, but it wasn’t long before she discovered that was all they were: stories. It's the first of seven books, the opening of what promises to be a sweeping story following two families over 100 years. The remaining chapters are told by a third present omnipresent narrator still focused on that character. It was after I overheard the Frob saying to another beak, ‘If Bridport was any brighter, he’d be a half-wit,’ that I knew I didn’t need to look any further for my accomplice. Eton has been known to bend the rules when it comes to members of the aristocracy and will occasionally allow a stupid boy to darken its doors, which is why I selected Percy for my little subterfuge in the first place.
