The company decided against using computers and automation in their distillery in favour of providing more jobs to people.

I had the opportunity to taste a number of Amrut whiskies at a local Whiskey Bar and Museum, so I knew that I already liked Amrut. This Amrut Portonova has been aged in American Oak and ex-Bourbon barrels and then transferred to once-used Portuaguese Port Pipes.

Amrut presents this product as a humble tribute to the Indian farmer, who has grown this barley with care and affection with which he has tilled the soil. The palate has a touch of smoke from the peated barley which develops on to caramel, honey, cereal barley notes with salty minerals. The spirit is then distilled again in Scottish-style, but Indian-made, 5,000-litre copper spirit still with a boil ball. The climate in India has a real influence on the shape of the product and it is said that 15% is lost each year during maturation, which means that we are unlikely to ever see an Amrut expression beyond 7 or 8 years old.

The word 'Amrut' derives its origin from the historic language of Sanskrit and means the 'Elixir of Life'.For this reason most of the Amrut single malts are released at around 4 years old - which taste wise are akin to much older whiskies from cooler countries, such as Scotland or Ireland. A rich, smoky Indian single malt whisky matured for 10 years and finished in an ex-rum cask, before being bottled in October 2019. The spirit used in the product is matured in either ex-Bourbon or new casks, and then in Sherry casks imported from Spain and Portugal. The eight-year maturation in Bangalore resulted in a high evaporative loss of 12% per annum, or a total loss of 274 litres of spirit over eight years, from the two Bourbon casks the distillery had used.

The brand became famous after whisky connoisseur Jim Murray gave it a rating of 82 out of 100 in 2005 and 2010. Then more like con-fusion as that smoke on the nose turns into warming, full blown peat, but it far from gets its own way as a vague sherry trifle note (curious, seeing how there are no sherry butts involved) - the custard presumably is oaky vanilla - hammers home that barley - fruitiness to make for a bit of a free-for-all; but for extra food measure the flavours develop into a really intense chocolate fudge middle which absolutely resonates through the palate.
