The phono switchers Graham pointed out would seem to be by far the cheapest and easiest option, I don't understand why you seem to have ruled these out? Okay you have to move 2 switches rather than 1 because they are only 3 wide but that doesn't seem such a hardship. I saw the below product yesterday, but anybody know if I can get one here in the UK?
