Description

The Hodgeheg is an enduring classic perfect for animal-loving children, while also providing an accessible and engaging story for children just beginning to branch out in their reading – great to read alone or read aloud with parents!

It talks about all the do’s and don’ts while crossing the road, and also different types of aiders like lollipop man, traffic lights or zebra crossing. I would recommend this book because it was very funny when Max the hedgehog got his words muddled up after he bumped his head against the kerbstone. We're told at the beginning of the story that his Auntie Betty has been killed crossing the road and that the roads are becoming more dangerous for hedgehogs. His bravery and determination made him try again and again and it's his not giving up that makes him such an inspiring little hedgehog-hero.Your Year 2 children will then be guided through how to extract information from the text, considering what in the story is factual and what is fiction.

They include The Sheep-Pig, which won the Guardian Award and was filmed as the hugely successful and beloved Babe, as well as The Hodgeheg, The Queen's Nose, The Fox Busters, the Sophie stories, Daggie Dogfoot (Pigs Might Fly) and many more. This vocabulary and punctuation also allows for children to develop their understanding of how they can read with expression through roleplay and drama. He crossed the road, but caused a big accident and then at the end he crossed the road by the lollipop lady and crossed safely. Interaction and animation is rife throughout the book, which makes is a very fun resource not only for reading alone but also for reading aloud as part of a group. His first attempt ends in a nasty bump on the head, and Max finds when he tries to speak his words are all mixed up. This book would be very useful for teaching children about road safety in a PSHE or citizenship lesson.

This is a good story of road safety and overcoming obstacles, which I used with year 3 which they enjoyed and were able to access easily as a class with it being read to them. Not only does it talk about a small hedgehog family life and some family etiquette but also, educate children on the rules, precautions and safety measures to be considered before crossing the road.He does so and, after the driver of a milk float almost crashes to avoid him, Max arrives home safely. He wrote a great number of children's books, including The Sheep-Pig (winner of the Guardian Award and filmed as Babe ), Harry's Mad , The Hodgeheg , Martin's Mice , The Invisible Dog, The Queen's Nose and The Crowstarver . Dick's story The Water Horse was also turned into a major Hollywood film, and The TV series' The Queen's Nose and Harry's Mad were very popular.
