Writing is all she’s ever wanted to do, and baking and murder stories have proved a winning combination. I was really excited about what I thought was being built up to, but it ended up going off on a completely different tangent to the one I was expecting. Despite all of this, the pacing of the story did throw me off a bit as it didn't really hook me until a good half way through and because of this it made the big twists, turns and ending feel quite rushed. At its heart, this is a tale of obsession, which I found fascinating (though it took a while to get there), but then so much other stuff started happening with murders and revenge that this primary theme that I wanted to learn more about got buried.

We know that Cleo is choosing to implode her own life, which seems to be going well, and we find out why through chapters dispersed throughout the current timeline that provide us the background that leads to her current situation. But now she has decided to walk away from it all including her husband, Wallace, before her past secrets catch up with her. I haven’t read anything by Dorothy Koomson before, but I will definitely be checking out her other books now, and I 100% this being on your 2022 must-read list.The ending hammers home with short sharp shocking chapters until I was finally able to take a huge intake of breath. Cleo is a successful author, but the people in her life are dying the same way as the characters in her novels are. All the words, no matter how pretty, no matter how clever, if they don’t come from the heart, they mean nothing. Usually, this would be a positive for me as I prefer to be shocked than for a story to go down the obvious route, but I did feel slightly let down when a new twist came into play.

Heath is really nothing at all as we first imagine, and as his behaviour becomes increasingly out of control, and his jealousy and paranoia increases, his actions have such a profound effect on Cleo.

Cleo narrates her own story, while her niece Lola adds a really interesting take, allowing you to step back and take on a different perspective.

I certainly couldn’t predict how the story would eventually play out, anyway, and it constantly took me by surprise, so this was such a great reading experience for me overall. I loved the alternating timelines that helped build a picture of the complex relationships between the characters over the years but out of all of them I think I loved Lola the most with her witty attitude and sass.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Dorothy Koomson really takes things to another level with My Other Husband. So this is first for my with this author but I've heard lots of great things about her so when I got the offer of an early read I thought I'd take the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about and I can now completely understand why she is so highly rated. Writing is all she's ever wanted to do, and baking and murder stories have proved a winning combination.For anyone that has read this authors books before, you know that you fall into the storyline hook line and sinker, and that you just keep reading. Nigerian food makes me feel nostalgic and reminds me of when I lived with my grandmother and how close I was to the authentic street food in Lagos. The contrast between then and now could not be starker with events of 25 years ago feeling like a romcom with the writing being light and breezy. In My Other Husband, Dorothy captures the cute awkwardness of a university romance and puts it up against mature endearing marital love.
