This score is the track’s prominent element and positively screams early Elfman (it’s very similar to the Darkman compositions he’d kick out a year later) and covers the film almost wall-to-wall with bouncing and blaring melodies. Later on, after Boone has died but before Lori is investigating Midian, there's an additional scene between Lori and her new friend Sheryl Anne, more clearly setting up her death later at the hands of Decker.

This version, overseen by Clive Barker, runs twenty minutes longer than the theatrical version and contains forty minutes of new and altered footage.Theatrical Cut: This is the theatrical release, reshot and edited in a way that skewed it toward a slasher film, which was not Clive Barker’s intention. It is difficult to suggest that evil is human and monsters have souls within the context of a mountain of special effects. A woman named Rachel (a nightbreed with the power to transform into smoke) pleads from the shadows for Lori to take it out of the sunlight.

The studio argued that there was no point showing Nightbreed to critics because the people who see horror films do not read reviews. The result is patchy in the extreme and not always capable of transcending a genre that has become less and less intriguing as less and less is left to the imagination". Rumors of a surviving extended cut circulated for decades and finally materialized when a VHS bootleg of the workprint was discovered and added to the reshoot footage to create a 159-minute extended cut, dubbed The Cabal Cut . I grew up with the butchered theatrical cut (weirdly I prefer the ending in that one) and had the pleasure of watching The Cabal Cut many moons ago, which adds so many extra scenes that it became overstuffed with things that weren't really needed.

The score was composed by Danny Elfman and conducted by Shirley Walker, who also wrote the additional cue "Charge of the Berserkers" for the film's climax and received an onscreen credit. This was only for the most die-hard fans, as there was a lot of lead-in, often no sound and some repeated scenes. An extended 159-minute cut version, from another VHS found in July 2009, premiered on March 27, 2010, as part of the HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis.
