About this deal

Her name has been forgotten by history, but Birdie Bell, the clockmaker’s daughter, watched it all unfold. This is an immersive, beautifully told story which was made to be devoured on a drizzly Sunday afternoon with a round of crumpets and a pot of tea. like the house at its centre, it is beautiful, welcoming and very good not only at keeping its secrets but at revealing them in due time.

This one was definitely a bit long, and it took a while to engage me, but it was lovely once it did. Granted this was a small-scale production, but if a tiny Fringe theatre such as The Landor can create supreme gorgeousness out of a minimal budget it should be possible for others to do so.Her family moved several times before settling on Tamborine Mountain where she attended a small country school. I’m a reader who enjoys this type of challenge, but for me the reading started to feel a bit like a task and I was tempted frequently to check my percentage completed at the bottom of my Kindle page. Unless explicitly stated that they are free, all books that I review have been purchased by me or borrowed from the library. has all the signature twists of a gothic Morton tale: deeply buried secrets, fateful twists, and old homes that almost breathe and reverberate from the energy contained within. So, no pressure on Trinity Laban then… I am delighted to say that by and large they mostly rose to the occasion.

Created differently from others, and slightly ‘odd’ on first meeting, he looks pretty much the same as other girls. Dreamy prose, lush landscapes, and fascinating characters combine to create a reading experience that is truly like no other. Book clubs and readers participating in “buddy reads” may appreciate the discussion possibilities in this story. However, there were moments of inspiration in Michael Howcroft’s direction (for example, creating a bridge and a brook out of benches), but I would have liked more imagination and colour in the set and staging. Instead, they experience the unpleasant circumstances of a murder, a missing person, and a stolen family heirloom. Sainsbury's Popular Fiction Award Best Novel nominee (2008), Nielsen Gold Book Award 2010, Golden Pan Award UK 1,000,000 copies sold, Indie Next Outstanding Debut Winter 2009.

a stunning and imaginative tale set around another hauntingly beautiful and unforgettable rural house. This is one of my most anticipated reads of the fall, and I wrestled more than usual with my star rating. It’s the kind of book you want to really focus on as you read it, and savor every last detail as it unfolds. And every year the tradition of ‘The Turning of the Key’ is re-enacted, and every year, attempts to turn Constance’s clock mechanism back on again, fail. a) meditative read, with lush settings, meticulous period details, and slowly unfurling enigmas will enjoy this book.

During her undergraduate studies she wrote two full-length manuscripts (which are unpublished) before writing The House at Riverton (The Shifting Fog), which was published in 2006. Elodie is curious about the drawing of the twin-gabled house situated on the bend of the river thinking that it resembles the house from a favorite fairy tale she heard from her mother, and she’s drawn to the beautiful and mysterious Victorian woman pictured in the photo. There were some standout performances and superb singing from this young student cast, notably Christy Bellis who truly delivered a fully rounded, intelligent and deeply affecting Constance.

Morton (The Lake House) explores the tangled history of people and place in her outstanding, bittersweet sixth novel . I’d be honored and thrilled if you choose to enjoy and follow along (see subscribe or follow option), promote, and/or share my blog.It is devastating though that later, when the reason for her true difference is fully revealed, only a few remember her best qualities. Think The Miniaturist meets The Little Stranger, woven together with a contemporary thread, and you won’t be far off. the stories, brilliantly told by Morton, offer musings on art, betrayal, and the ways in which real lives and real places can evolve over time into the stuff of legends. Books take us to places we’ve never been, they teach us about our world, and they help us to understand human experience. Moving back and forth in time, Morton weaves her disparate stories together involving murder, theft, love and loss, secrets and lies.
