Splendor Duel is a two-player only standalone game based on Splendor that retains some of the main gameplay mechanisms of that design, while being a bit more complex, dynamic, interactive, rich, tense, and mean. Splendor Duel is intended for a wide range of players: Splendor fans who want to discover the game’s new rules and have a go at new tactics, and the 2-player game fans who will experience a fierce duel in less than 30 minutes.

At the start of your turn, you can spend a privilege token to grab any non-gold token from the board, then you take your turn like normal. If your opponent collects two pearls or three tokens of the same color in a single turn, you receive a privilege token to compensate for the random token placement that fell their way.Flowing from card to card enables players to better construct their jewel-churning engine, which consequently allows them to overcome any obstacles produced by jewel scarcity or the layout of the board. With 3 players: 2 tokens of each gem color except gold are removed (there should be only 5 of each remaining). Privilege tokens can be acquired by purchasing certain cards or whenever your opponent fills the board and are valuable resources for navigating the fickle luck of token placement.

You then shuffle all the tokens in the bag, take them in a stack in your hand, then refill the board by starting at the center and following the line outward, dropping one token in each empty space. A player can be visited if they have (at least) the quantity and type of bonuses indicated on the noble tile. If your opponent lacks a pearl or gold, then you know which cards are currently inaccessible to them, which helps you better determine which cards they are targeting should you want to acquire or reserve them first. Finally, if an item card depicts a gem, this card acts as a permanent gem in that player’s possession, negating the need for one gem of that type when making future purchases. You MUST take one gold token from the board and a Jewel card from any of the 3 lines or draw blind from any of the decks (“reserve”) – don’t forget to keep your reserve card secret, and replace any space with a new card from the deck!To reserve a card, a player simply needs to take a face-up development from the middle of the table or (if you’re feeling lucky) draw the first card from one of the three decks (level ◯;◯◯;◯◯◯) without showing it to the other players.

Purchased development cards are placed face-up in front of the player, and give that player prestige points equal to the number in the top-left corner of the card.I hope this little guide helps you work out if this is a game for you, as well as holds your hand through your first game. The grid contains 25 tokens at the start of play: four of each of the five colors, three gold, and two pearls. The player who then has the highest number of prestige points is declared the winner (don’t forget to count your nobles). This means that players will have to switch strategies or simply wait until the board is refilled once again – which, whilst being a free action, also gives your opponent more options as well as yourself. However, Splendor Duel relies on entirely new rules and offers unique game contents: a common board, Privilege figurines, and Royal Favor cards.
