It's perfect to me, when I put the disc in I clocked that 142 minute run-time and thought; "Hmm, it's already quite late.Set in the 1100s, Prince of Thieves departs from the traditional origins of Robin by making him a soldier/prisoner of war in King Richard’s Crusade in the middle east. Reynolds work at establishing every single character, large and small, is admirable, setting up the characters of Robin and his unlikely companion, Morgan Freeman's loyal Azeem, the nefarious Sheriff and his minions, including Michael Wincott's Guy of Gisborne, and then the Merry Men, including Christian Slater no less, as well as, of course, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's Lady Marian. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Arrow Video with a 2160p transfer in 1.

The attack on Sherwood is a great large scale set piece, but the more grounded fights, whether it’s Robin taking on Guy of Gisbourne (Michael Wincott, putting his gravelly voice to menacing use) and his men, a good natured staff battle with Little John (Nick Brimble, imposing but avuncular) or the final duel with Alan Rickman’s Sheriff of Nottingham.When the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham murders Robin's father, the legendary archer vows vengeance. Films are not usually made like this one anymore, which is an experience rather than showcasing a few big action sequences and sewing them together with characters.

Theatrical Cut (UHD; 2:23:12) and Extended Cut (UHD; 2:35:02) are accessible under the Choose Version Menu. But Reynolds also had a great time exploring those surprisingly fun moments of a first-person shot of an arrow whizzing by, which of course would later be used in the best film of all time - Army of Darkness.Today, part of that is because in an age of largely CG action in big films, the palpable reality of Prince of Thieves’ sets and stunts lend a genuine sense of danger as, once things really ramp up, fireballs fly from catapults into the tree city built in Sherwood forest. As a result, it ain’t the sexiest looking movie, replete with inconsistencies with focus and shifting colours and the difficulties of a rapid shoot, heavily reliant on natural light. For the most part the DV application is loving and natural, merely enhancing the vibrance of the woodland setting, dominated by browns as opposed to lush greens.

It’s still a verbose and immersive mix but it could have been—no, it should have been—a mix that matches modern capabilities. Yes, it's a film almost overshadowed by its hit song's own music video, but it is a bloody good romp nonetheless and - rather curiously - a pretty fun companion-piece to Costner's later water-themed adventure, Waterworld, also from Reynolds. The brilliant modern remake that Errol Flynn brought to audiences decades prior now had a big budget, great set pieces, and top actors in every role. Costner may be the poster-boy for the film, but Rickman - having the script reworked to be even more snappy - is the MVP.The extended cut of the film is one of the options to choose from and it's a whopping twelve extra minutes with more Alan Rickman.
