I am impressed by the fact that it’s a diverse book written by someone of another religion and different beliefs to me. While I appreciate a book written in the style of Diary of a Wimpy Kid with a Muslim main character, this book fell short on many levels. I also liked the fact that this book promotes diversity about a Muslim boy and is family but is also very informative about their religion and traditions. Black and white illustrations and fabulous use of font and formatting maintain the high energy levels as the boys’ alien-fuelled plot bounces along. Planet Omar is an interesting book which I think was funny and had a good storyline about a boy (Omar) who started a new school but had issues with bullies as he is Muslim.Omar is a Muslim and I really liked learning all about Muslim things because it was really interesting and sounded fun. It’s important to make it clear that bullying is unacceptable, and covering this in other sessions e. Each kid gets one page all to themselves and there are around four to five facts about each kid per page.

At the start of the book, we meet the characters and find out information about them which I thought was really useful, I liked this a lot. Zanib manages to be so inclusive with seemingly minimal effort and puts to shame those who make it so explicit that it can get in the way of a good story.As a reader I like how the author chose to present some of the words as illustrations as this made it easier to follow and was also engaging. The illustrations certainly help with the flow of the book and make the reading easier for young children. I think this would be a great book to use as a cross curricular link between RE and literacy, and I cannot wait to use it in my classroom.
