About this deal

It has an open handle / “wedge” design. This gives your wrist and forearm more range of motion. And it makes it more comfortable if your forearms is up against the side of the handle since you don’t have the plastic edge digging in. Some people like the padded wrist supports because it can give you some nice leverage or stability on certain exercises. For example, on curls, you can prop your wrist against one of the support pads, which lets you focus on the biceps more. It’s also a plus if you have weaker wrists. However, some people — especially those with larger hands and wrists — find that it can feel cramped inside the handle.

Differences Between PowerBlocks (and which is the best?)

Even though these are my favorite adjustable dumbbells, they aren’t without their flaws. High Weight Bulkiness The Pro Series have urethane molded over steel plates. The urethane provides a major protective buffer between the underlying steel portion of the plates. This greatly reduces noise during use because there’s no metal-on-metal clanking. The urethane also absorbs impact, making the Pro Series dumbbells more likely to survive drops unscathed (though you still shouldn’t drop them purposely). It’s also more comfortable to handle (think holding them on your thighs for bench/shoulder press) because the urethane is softer than metal and it rounds out the hard edges. Inspect the shipment to make sure that the number of pieces indicated on the receiving paperwork matches up with what you are actually receiving.

Important update: the Pro doesn’t have a handle guard. In comparison, the Elite has two rails on either side restricting the handle cavity space. If you’re clenched fist is bigger than 5″, then the Pro or Sport is the better option! Material: NOTE: Although the 90 lb Pro EXP Stage 3 set would be my ideal first choice, I understand that budget is very important for most people, myself included… I’ve tested both and they are the same (the Elite EXP being the most recently released version and the Elite USA being the older version). Please inspect for any visual signs of damage and have this notated on your delivery receipt prior to signing. Do you know of any significant improvement differences between the Pro EXPs and the previous U series? (Aside from the color bar scheme).

If you want the greatest protection against scratches and rust. The urethane coating is far superior to powder coating in this regard. I’ve also heard that the urethane used on the Pro EXP’s may be better than what was used on the U90s (e.g. it might be overall more durable and/or be better able to withstand hot/cold temps) — But don’t quote me on that, as I haven’t confirmed it. I personally prefer the color-coding of the Pros over the Elites, but don’t feel this alone justifies the price difference. Handle: It’s difficult for me to choose a clear-cut winner between the Elite 90 and the Sports EXP Stage 3. It’s pretty much a tie… The Pro EXP, Pro 50 and Sport EXP have adder weights. The Sport 50, Sport 24 and Pro 32 do not have adder weights.

Both are great dumbbells and actually very similar (you can choose depending on your aesthetic preferences). There are two swappable pairs of handles (5 lbs & 10 lbs) and no adder weights. Changing the weight is even faster on this set because you don’t have to take the time to insert or remove the adder weights. You change the selector pin setting and/or swap the handles.

Differences in weight settings become more apparent when comparing the non-expandable Pros and Sports. The closed handle design was on many different models in the past. Currently, the closed handle design is only seen on the Elite USA dumbbells. It’s characterized by padded wrist supports at the top of the handle (as shown in the photo above). This creates a more restricted handle opening, hence the “closed” handle terminology.

Not Recommended For

In addition to reviewing gym equipment, I also own a couple other businesses, have three kids, a wife, and many other responsibilities. Training is a supplement to everything else in my life and therefore forces me to value each second I spend in the gym.

PowerBlock Elite 90 EXP Adjustable Dumbbells [Stage 1]

They both replace up to 28 pairs of dumbbells when fully expanded and adjust in 2.5lb/5lb increments using the chrome adder weights. The exercise combinations you can put together to create changing workouts that will deliver results are virtually endless, making this a very wise investment for your home gym. The Pro Series consists of 3 separate dumbbell models, including one expandable model and two non-expandable models: Furthermore, the Sports 24 and 50 feature 3lb and 5lb weight increments (respectively) which are slightly larger compared to the Elites and Sport EXP.Overall, all Pro Series models have a more durable design than the Sport Series models. This is due to the urethane coated plates as well as their non-welded “flex” design. The pin has magnets on the inside to hold it securely against the weights. Although I’ve had mine fall out during dumbbell snatches one time, it was only because I didn’t place it all the way in. Otherwise, this method for holding the weights hasn’t caused me any issues.
