About this deal

I would definitely recommend this as a fast paced, adorable read perfect for pride month- or any month really- overflowing with love and friendship. Frances gets angry when Sebastian won't let her present her work to an important designer named Madame Aurelia, and has to pretend she's a nameless servant to keep his secret. Eventually, she decides to quit and work at her old job. Staff (October 6, 2018). "2018 Harvey Awards Winners (Full List)". Newsarama. Archived from the original on January 2, 2020 . Both Frances and Sebastian feel society expects certain behaviors from them. Make a list of expectations they each face. Just the Way You Are: Eventually, the King and Queen say this about Sebastian after they find him at Frances's fashion show in the climax. It's also why he falls for Frances, who has never judged him. Ambiguous Time Period: There's no mention of what year or era the story takes place. However, the fact that it takes place in Paris, France and the Eiffel Tower is nowhere in sight it's safe to assume that it takes before 1887 at least.

Both characters are wonderful and lovable and, as readers shall soon see, they are surrounded by some pretty amazing secondary characters, too. The whole fashion show near the end might just be one of the best things I've ever seen XD Everyone Can See It: Heavily implied. King Leo tells Frances that while he was scared of what would happen to Sebastian openly dressing in women's clothing, he decided that everything would be okay "because someone still loved him" giving Frances a furtive look. Themes:acceptance and inclusion, identity, friendship, family, speaking up, coming of age GRAPHIC NOVEL DISCUSSION AND ACTIVITY GUIDE CONTENTS It's hard, however, when you're the only one who knows your friend's deepest secret. Obviously, you want to protect your friend, but what if it means having to keep your achievements a secret, too? Everyone knows that Frances is Sebastian's seamstress, but if she started to get acclaim as the dressmaker for Lady Crystallia, it won't take long for people—especially the king and queen—to put two and two together and realize who Lady Crystallia really is. And that would be disastrous for Sebastian.

Costume Porn: There is no denying there are many beautiful clothes pictured. Many of which are designed by Frances in-universe. And, shall I end with the ending? It was contrived and implausible to the point of turning me green. Towards the end of the book, in Chapter 11, the King tells Frances, “When I first learned the truth, I thought Sebastian’s life would be ruined. But seeing you, I realized everything would be fine.Because someone still loved him.” Describe Frances’ words or actions throughout the story that show her love for Sebastian. When she was growing up, Wang was hugely inspired as an artist and storyteller by Disney movies. In an interview with Book Riot she said, “The first time I can really remember thinking about narrative storytelling was when I watched The Little Mermaid when I was a kid. I remember thinking that it was somebody’s job to do, to draw everything. There was just something really magical about it that I wanted to be able to do.”
