Conroy, Catherine (28 April 2018). "Bridget Jones of the Blitz: AJ Pearce's happy war story". The Irish Times . Retrieved 6 October 2021.

Following the departure of the formidable Editor, Henrietta Bird, from Woman’s Friend magazine, things are looking up for Emmeline Lake as she takes on the challenge of becoming a young wartime advice columnist. Her relationship with boyfriend Charles is blossoming, while Emmy’s best friend Bunty, is still reeling from the very worst of the Blitz, but bravely looking to the future. Together, the friends are determined to Make a Go of It. The Times I raced through Mrs Porter Calling, it is just brilliant, so utterly charming and uplifting . . . all I want is for Emmy and Bunty to be my friends! An absolute delight! I loved Dear Mrs. Bird and was thrilled to spend more time with Emmy and Bunty in Yours, Cheerfully. AJ Pearce shines a light on the hardships that women factory workers faced during World War II, an echo to the plight of working mothers today. Endearing, poignant, and relevant, this uplifting novel is a treat!" —Janet Skeslien Charles, author of The Paris Library Pearce captures the spirit and hopefulness of those left at home during war, and readers will delight in this second chance to ride along with Emmy." — Booklist This reading group guide for Yours Cheerfully includes an introduction, discussion questions, and ideas for enhancing your book club. Emmy Lake is a character for the ages." —J ennifer Rosner, author of The Yellow Bird Sings The women in the factories are paid less, expected to sort out childcare, run households and basically be available to work any shift over a 24-hour period. Emmy can see the strain this is having and her conscience plays with her. Can she really promote and encourage women to work in such an imbalanced environment? Can she, as a journalist, do more? Thanks #NetGalley @ScribnerBooks for a complimentary eARC of #YoursCheerfully upon my request. All opinions are my own. Full of the cheerful bravery and good humor that makes AJ Pearce’s writing so special, with punch-the-air moments set against the sadness and loss of war." —Julie Cohen, author of Spirited I read because books are a form of transportation, of teaching, and of connection! Books take us to places we’ve never been, they teach us about our world, and they help us to understand human experience.”

Together, the friends are determined to Make a Go of It. As with Dear Mrs. Bird, the women in this book are far more interesting than the men. . . . But perhaps that is one of the points of the book—that the war propelled women out of their traditional roles and into the mess of life, while the men kept a stiff upper lip and carried on." — Minneapolis Star Tribune Emmy reflects that in the letters to Yours Cheerfully the readers often “referred to something a friend of theirs had said. They weren’t always complimentary, but invariably you knew that their friends were a central part of their world, especially with so many men now away” (220). How does the war affect women’s everyday lives? Why are friendships so vital? Mrs. Edwards of Woman Today is a memorable figure and a role model for Emmy. Why does she make such an impression on Emmy?

Yours Cheerfully: the best possible antidote for the blahs, the doldrums, all slumps, but also effective against letdowns and general malaise. Loved. Every. Word." — Bonnie Garmus, author of Lessons in Chemistry Recommended: I’m warmly recommending Yours Cheerfully (and Dear Mrs. Bird) for readers looking for light, inspirational, and heartwarming WW11 historical fiction (closed door romance, no profanity, no graphic violence), for fans of fiesty and independent female protagonists, and for book clubs. I think I enjoyed Yours Cheerfully a bit more than Dear Mrs. Bird but that could be because I’ve become familiar with the characters, the setting, and the author. I’m definitely looking forward to more books in the Emmy Lake series! Read more about nurseries and the role they played in World War II in Britain via the East End Women’s Museum at https://eastendwomensmuseum.org/blog/2018/8/7/women-babies-and-bombs-how-day-nurseries-contributed-to-working-womens-lives-during-wwii. London, September 1941. Things are looking up for Emmy Lake as she takes on the challenge of becoming a young wartime advice columnist. Her relationship with her boyfriend, Charles, is blossoming, while her best friend Bunty, still reeling from a terrible loss in the Blitz, is trying to move forward. Together, the friends are determined to Make a Go of It. As Emmy grapples with these questions, and with the turn of events in her personal life, she has to dig deep and find the strength to be true to her own beliefs but also be mindful of the chaos descending on the world around her.

The best possible antidote for the blahs, the doldrums, all slumps, all dumps . . . Loved. Every. Word.' - Bonnie Garmus, author of Lessons in Chemistry Was Emmy right to suggest the parade to Anne and her friends at Chandlers? What might you try to do for the women if you were Emmy? A heart-warming, heart-wrenching wartime story from The Sunday Times bestselling author of Dear Mrs Bird, AJ Pearce.Main Character: I admire Emmeline as the protagonist. I like a series that follows one character (as opposed to other series that rotate the protagonist of each story). We notice Emmeline’s growth as a competent and confident columnist, observe as she’s challenged by the unfairness of women’s work conditions, and cheer for her actions and involvement. Although Emmy has a fiance, the romance is not a main focus of the story. Yours Cheerfully is a testament to the strength of women and the importance of lifting each other up, even in the most challenging times.
