About this deal

White Satin (70 days)– White Satin is a fast-growing carrot with creamy white roots and green shoulders. The tops are tall and grow up to 18”, but can break off when pulled. I therefore prefer to lift the roots from the soil with my garden fork. Expect a bumper crop of 8 to 9” long carrots that are very juicy and lightly sweet. Great for juicing. When you dig up the carrots, if they are not going to eaten soon, cut the leafy tops off to prevent them from wilting during storage. To grow long, straight roots, prepare the soil to a fine tilth, removing stones and breaking up clumps. Water before sowing, and do so directly and thinly by mixing with sharp sand gently sprinkled into a trench 1.5cms deep. Spread your sowing over six weeks or so for a long and bountiful harvest without the glut.

Do several plantings of carrots, spacing them out by three weeks, to get a continuous harvest throughout the gardening season. Carrot seeds should always be planted twice as deep as they are wide – so only about 1/4″. How can you germinate carrot seeds faster? As soon as the soil temperature has reached 40⁰F, carrot seeds can be planted, even if the last estimated frost for your area has not occurred. Carrots are considered a cool-season vegetableand can be grown in either the fall or early spring. Carrots prefer soil temperatures between 55 and 75⁰F, so seeds will germinate much faster under these conditions. Carrots can be grown earlier in the season in hot desert climates. You will need to thin the seedlings so that the plants are 2 to 3 inches apart in the row after germination. Germination can take up to 3 weeks. Some growers will plant rows closer together in a bed system, and there are many special seeders for the home or market gardener sold today specifically for carrot production. When to Plant Carrots As carrots prefer cooler weather, they can be planted in either spring or fall. A number of problems can affect a carrot crop. Carrot root flies are maggots that eat the roots and devastate the carrot. If you see any sign of these, the best thing to do is harvest your crop immediately so the maggots don't get the rest. Carrot flies detect the carrot roots by their sweet scent. Planting chives or another strong smelling plant near the carrots can help cover the irresistible carrot aroma.

Because of the relatively vertical nature of the plant’s form, carrots can be grown fairly densely, and are therefore useful within the economy of space in a smaller growing area. That is, even a little garden can produce a lot more in carrots than by, say, lettuce or cucumbers. The seeds can be sown from early spring right through late summer for a harvest that will last nearly year round, so they form an essential part of nearly every vegetable garden. When I see multi-coloured carrots, it sparks joy. I have no idea why, but it does! Just so pretty, and when roasted, the sweetness of heirloom rainbow carrots are even more elevated. Completely remove infected plants from your garden and destroy them if you suspect your carrots have been infected by this disease. There is no cure once infected. Remove perennial weeds from your garden which can act as host plants for this disease. Use light-colored mulches to disorient leafhopper insects. Sunburn If the tops of carrots are not protected by soil, the sun exposure can cause discoloration and an odd flavor. Flavour/Texture: I love the texture of roasted rainbow carrots as they are super tender but still retain a slight crunchy/chewy bite. It’s not mushy like boiled carrots! Together with the fluffy pearl couscous, it’s a great combination.

Yellow carrots

Heirloom rainbow carrots: Commonly available in Australia, heirloom carrots are not very big, and you get approximately 8-10 small carrots in a bunch. If you find them too small, I would get two bunches of rainbow carrots to serve 4 people.

An unusual variety that produces amazing roots from orange to yellow to white. A strong growing variety with healthy and vigorous foliage. Approximately 90 days from sowing to maturity. A mixture of colours will give an extra interest to harvesting your root vegetables. A great carrot to grow for and with kids, just imagine them pulling the carrots up without knowing what colour to except. Please note carrots are not the easiest of vegetables to grow well and benefit from lighter stone free soils. Over medium heat, dry roast cumin seeds in a frypan for 2 minutes to release the aromates. They may start popping in the pan. Kyoto Red (75 days)– This is a Japanese carrot and has rosy red roots and tall, healthy tops. The carrots are smooth with red skin and interiors and can grow up to a foot in length. I like to plant seeds in mid-summer for a fall and winter harvest. Whenever you visit the grocery store, you usually only see orange carrots. Commercially grown, this variety of carrots are the most common. The first cultivation of orange carrots in Europe is believed to have been in the 1500s. The Dutch led the orange carrot breeding movement and eventually developed orange carrot varieties that were notably sweeter. When sowing fresh carrot seeds, you can plant one per hole. But if you’re using old seeds, place 2-3 per hole, and thin them later. How deep do you plant carrot seeds? Aster yellowsis a disease that is transmitted by leafhoppers, which are small insects that feed on the juices of the plant. The roots will become hairy and the tops will become yellow if plants have become infected with aster yellows. Growing carrots from seed is amazingly easy and fun. With no need for transplanting or starting the seeds indoors, it really takes the burden out of planting them. Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

INSECT PESTS: Carrot rust flies and wireworms. Provide fertile growing conditions and avoid ground recently in sod if possible. Exclude adult insects with fabric row covers. During the Arab expansion into Europe, cultivated carrots were brought to the area of Andalusia (Spain). From Spain, carrot cultivation spread into the rest of northern Europe. The first carrots that were brought over to Europe were either purple or a mutant of the purple carrot that appeared yellow. The carrots were purple because they contained high amounts of anthocyanins, a pigment compound touted today for its antioxidant properties. In a mixing bowl, place toasted cumin seeds, rainbow carrots, olive oil and salt together. Toss well. Keep reading to learn more about the many purple, yellow, red, and white carrot varieties available from seed companies.
