About this deal

Well, it’s undoubtedly a murder. A body found in a ditch halfway to Ely. An unidentified man in his mid-thirties. Labourer or farmland from the callouses on his hands and the muscles on his arms, but beyond that we have no idea who he is.” The only problem is that Hitlers right hand man Martin Bormann is equally determined that that doesn’t happen. The truth is I was bored, and struggled to read for more than twenty minutes without losing concentration, and I don't know why. It is slow-building drama, perhaps I found it a little too dawdling and quaint. Professor Tom Wilde wants to return to a normal life. To his professorship at Cambridge, to his wife and child, to the book he wants to write. But somehow it seems the world isn't quite ready for him to retire to normality, and he is thrown into a plot that could change the course of England's future, and the world's as well.

The book is to some degree split into two parts, however, the plotting and pace of the story is spot on. The book is set in the Autumn of 1945, when all of a sudden in a small village called, Flowthorpe, a kind of lethal virus is injuring and killing people.

A young English lady works in Berlin to get important papers to a Jewish scientist, evading the Gestapo to do it. But just a few weeks later, she is discovered dead with a silver syringe in her hands. Then in an exclusive club in London, a conspiracy takes off that could threaten the very center of government. Revenger is the second book in the John Shakespeare series. It was published in 2010. In this exciting sequel to Martyr, the year is 1592. The countries of Spain and England are at war. But while there are risks going on and the war being waged, home is not safe either. The regal Queen Elizabeth is left vulnerable ever since the passing of Sir Francis Walsingham, who was her most trusted spymaster. This is one of the worst things that could happen while a country is at war, but what can you do?

THE STORY: In the autumn of 1945, a Japanese submarine surfaces off the coast of England, unloads a lethal cargo, then blows itself to pieces. In this maelstrom of plotting and changing of allegiances , this spy story is based. I admit to 'losing' some of the characters and their loyalties in the plot as so-called allies plotted an offensive against another faction of maybe allies both sets thinking they had the Country's best interest at heart.FB is Frank Broussard. “US Air Force officer. Lieutenant-Colonel Frank Broussard, Flowthorpe airbase.” Frank was MI5 and Catesby’s informant, that’s why they went after Tom. I'm torn with this one. It has all the makings of a good book. It is well-written and is a solid historical fiction. We follow Thomas as he uncovers the mystery of Nancy's death, and gets caught up with Nazi-sympathisers, Russians, and very real danger around every corner. Some sort of broken canister. There is writing on part of it which, to my untrained eye looks very like Japanese characters.”

The fallout of war casts its long shadow on 1930’s England. While fragile teacups clink innocently against their saucers in houses up and down the country, the elements of conspiracy are frighteningly close and its darkening divide has the potential to alter the course of history as we know it. Yes indeed, Corpus is dominated by misdirection and kept me on my toes throughout. OK so before I get to writing about the book, I have to compliment the author for giving his main character, the Cambridge Professor Thomas Wilde, the perfect speech to explain why I love history. British author Rory Clements writes mysteries in series. His first series featured John Shakespeare (supposedly a relative of William You-know-who) in the court and service of Queen Elizabeth. They were excellent looks at the people and the times in the late 16th century. Clements’ second series features Tom Wilde and is set in the 1930’s and 40’s. Wilde is half British and half American and is a history professor at Cambridge. There have been 7 Tom Wilde books in the series. “The English Fuhrer” is the seventh. This is part of the Tom Wilde series, although it was my first outing with him. Tom Wilde is a Cambridge History Professor and the setting for this story is Autumn 1941.

If You Like Rory Clements Books, You’ll Love…

When I requested this on NetGalley I was fascinated by the idea of the story, and had no idea this was part of a series. I was concerned that it would make little sense on its own - and I’m sure some of these characters and their relationships would be clearer if you knew the previous books - but I worried needlessly. Rory Clements is a published author of fiction. He is a best-selling author that has won the 2018 CWA Historical Dagger for his novel Nucleus. This was hard work. When a publisher advertises a novel 'for fans of Robert Harris' I expect more. Harris is a master at taking historical events, building believable characters, bringing dialogue to life and creating real suspense - even when the reader knows the outcome. Rory Clements doesn't. My thanks to Bonnier Books U.K. Zaffre for an eARC and to Bonnier U.K. Audio for a review copy of the unabridged audiobook edition, both via NetGalley, of ‘The English Führer’ by Rory Clements. The audiobook is narrated by Adam Sims. A huge event goes unreported at the same time. Otto Hahn in Germany has made the first man-created fission and now the possibility of an atomic device coming to fruition is very likely. The Nazis have set their own physicist group up to build their own superbomb, aware that the Americans and the British are doing the same.

Tom Wilde really does need to be thankful he isn’t part of our snowflake, politically correct and health and safety correct society as he is still in the don’t worry things will turn out okay if we keep the stiff upper lip then things will turn out fine generation.Yes, yes, yes. Exactly right. This is what history teaches you. Work hard for your opinions, search, evaluate, criticise, look for more, ask who benefits, challenge every assumption. Do this every day. Not just what people are telling you, but WHY. Look beyond what you are given, seek what is being hidden.
