About this deal

I written several separate articles on this topic since first running icrpg core to e. Index card RPG owes a lot to video games. In particular, it draws a lot of inspiration from games such as the legend of Zelda and final Fantasy series. This requires a shift in mindset when thinking about how to play. And it is a turnoff for a number of gamers I know. It has made icrpg a bit of a hard sell at times. Thanks to its emphasis on flexibility, accessibility, and empowering players, Index Card RPG is an excellent place to start your tabletop journey - or continue it. I've never seen a system that's easier to get into, and it's surprisingly robust in spite of this.

If you want to do something, you use the tried and true d20 approach of rolling a d20 and adding all your modifiers and hope to beat the Target. Along with index cards, one of the new-old things in ICRPG is the idea of the Target. It’s basically the DC you need to meet or beat. The difference here is that it is universal, either for a card or even for the whole adventure. It’s publicly visible and the GM can adjust it — for reasons. […] You can write your own epic narrative on how each [character] uses the thing they are good at to overcome the obstacle. You can have all the detail you want without lots of exception-based rules. And your Effort is applied to the Encounter’s Hearts. Hearts are used to judge the amount of Effort, and therefore time, you’ll need to get through the Encounter. While one Heart equates to 10 points of Effort and therefore 10 traditional hit points, it’s also a judge of how long it will take you or your party to get past it. […]

Indie hit Index Card RPG and its much anticipated new ‘Master Edition’ has built a die-hard following of DIY RPG creators and players since its creation in 2016. Until now, it has been found in 3 hardcopy books and numerous PDF's published by its creator, Runehammer, via DriveThruRPG. We initially built blood and snow characters, which it said didn't have pluses to effort. The attributes don't give pluses to effort? In celebration of this anniversary, the Runehammer fan community invites you to join in an unprecedented online gaming event—RuneJammer 2023—an entire week of ICRPG play opportunities and live workshops, with over 50 game sessions offered by our fantastic community contributors. The Turnip Knights: Here’s my promo video of this book. This is the other one that I wrote. It was not illustrated by Mr. Gilhelm. It’s an all-halfling one-shot that contains three “rooms” or scenes with encounters. I am very fond of halflings, so all extra player tags, culture notes and town descriptions were a joy to create. Icrpg has removed some of the complaints that I had of the previous edition. There's no more hunting for buried rules, everything is a lot more clearly stated. Useless vestigium like weapon tags have been removed from the game. Character death is a little easier to achieve.

I am currently running a Warp Shell campaign for Index Card RPG Master Edition. This game runs fast. Combat encounters, even complex ones, tend to resolve themselves in just a few minutes. You can get a lot of gaming done in a very compact space of time. Simplicity In March 2021 we presented the Index Card RPG Bundle featuring the fast-playing, modular DIY RPG toolset from Runehammer Games.Hankering kept up his promise to keep icrpg future proof offering free updates to existing additions. Andy kept his word. I'm willing to believe he would do the same if he developed a 4th edition of icrpg in the future. One of the things I absolutely loved about index card RPG was the fact that if you stripped a character of all their gear, all they might be left with are possibly a couple of wisdom-based divine magic powers, and those are randomly gained. You can effectively hit the reset button on a character simply by taking away gear. And class was nothing but a gear list as well. This made an effectively classless and levelless role-playing game. NOTE: These regulations are listed if you intend to sell or distribute your creations to a wider audience than your own gaming table. If you’re creating content and resources for your own table with no intent to share your creations further, then have it! May the DIY spirit smile kindly upon you! Skal! If a character loses all of their gear, they're left with only a few character class abilities, some of which are gear dependent anyway, and so a character can be reset to nearly beginning level of ability whenever it suits the campaign, which ends itself to a greater level of campaign longevity. tTMoAeRReEGtCEoOTrVbwEeiatRhtCtDOh2eN0c+u+r1rCeHOnPNt Stthaerbmoillilaz. neTdahmifsaaskltlieonnpgsaaltnlhyeINbiryTDtoYoruINcWhGiInSg

Card Forge (FREE) a collaborative web app to create and share open Loot Cards for the worlds of ICRPGThis extends to Dungeon/Game Masters too, by the way. Along with advice for making your life easier, you can also buy a series of very cheap, illustrated Index Cards for printing out. These help you create entire sessions much like a Tarot reading. Want to see the adventure location? Draw a random card. Can't decide on a boss? Draw another card. It's perfect if you're a time-strapped GM and ideal for improvisation - in my test session, we had a blast coming up with explanations for the often-bizarre cards we ended up with. It's a thing of pure imagination, and the results are special.

This level-less and classless approach has been abandoned slightly by the new Master Edition, however. Characters classes matter in so far as they not only set starting gear, but also grants one of a choice of three special abilities that are independent of year. After rolling 20 natural 20s, the character gains an advanced version of that ability. After that, after an additional 20 natural twenties they gain both another option they did not select and the advanced version of that option. After their 41st through 60th natural 20s, they gain all the remaining special abilities for their class. Classes also continue to have milestone equipment lists that serve as rewards for accomplishing in campaign goals.

Something to Say?

The Index Card RPG is an innovative take old school Dungeons and Dragons. Simple rules, easy character creation, and more set this role-playing game apart from others. Personally, my favorite might be the prehistoric Blood and Snow. Exploring a precursor world where cities don't exist and megafauna roam the ice is a compelling idea we don't get all that often in the tabletop space. Should you buy Index Card RPG? How do you build a stealth dagger rogue different to a fighter? Less con? Considering all melee weapons are str only, it doesn't seem like there'd be much difference other than the name you give it later. RuneJammer 2023 welcomes complete newcomers to the RPG hobby as well as gamers of any experience level who want to discover ICRPG’s fast, flexible system, and it features all five adventure settings included in Master Edition—Alfheim, Warp Shell, Ghost Mountain, Blood and Snow, and Vigilante City—offering a wide variety of unique roleplaying adventures presented the Runehammer way.
