About this deal

Selling “A Bone Season” did not prove to be that difficult. Bloomsbury Publishing Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Pringle bought the book and signed her to a seven-book deal. Pringle was not really interested in fantasy novels before that but when she read Shannon, she was impressed. “The Bone Season” reminded her of fairy tales and the C.S Lewis Narnia series.

Stripped of its fancy words**, the world is nothing special really : think PNR blended with Dystopian YA (there's even an attempt at Resistance - I CANNOT STAND RESISTANCE PLOTS ANYMORE. There. I said it). Granted, the magical system is complex and interesting, but it's barely exploited! We have all these different kinds of clairvoyants and for what?? Do their powers count in the end? Barely. Only Paige's counts, because come on, she's the heroine, duh. The Pale Dreamer is the prequel to The Bone Season which I am hoping to read in the not too distant future, and the first piece I have ever read by Shannon. I went into this novella blind, and found that I actually really enjoyed this novella. It reminded me quite a bit of The Archived and The Unbound by Victoria Schwab (another series I love) as it focuses on the spirits of the dead and how to "contain" them, and the London setting also reminded me of Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I absolutely love this book – it's my favourite in the series so far, and I really can't wait to share it with you. Just got my first glimpse of the cover and it's stunning. The Mask Falling is officially done now, off to the typesetter to be transformed from a manuscript to a book, so there should be no further delays.d.) A completely made-up, very complex system - actually more than one system - of supernatural stuff that is described in made-up nonsense words and you need a glossary to even get an inkling of what's going on. In this prequel, we are shown the origins of Paige's alias, her special talent, and how she assisted in Anne Naylor's case which is intriguing and a bit macabre! I enjoyed the writing style; however, I am a bit confused with the Victorian “feel” of the language used in a world set in the future - to me, it’s quite jarring and I can’t fully meld the two things together. Shannon credits the campus, with its well maintained landscaping and historic buildings, for providing the setting for the penal colony in her first book. Shannon graduated St. Anne’s College in 2013 but by then she was already on her way to becoming a successful author. When it's been nearly two months since you read The Song Rising and all you can think about is how you really want TBS4 now. *wishes for a time machine*

The year is 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of Scion London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. Her job: to scout for information by locating human minds. Paige is a dreamwalker, the rarest type of clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing. That ending... I'll need forever to get over that ending. Honestly, a book ending hadn't chilled me so since Lord of Shadows.

Reviews

There's a quote in The Mask Falling that perfectly describes not only my feelings towards this installment but the whole series in general so far; "I am of the considered opinion that for every person, there exists a book that will sing to them. I trust that you will find yours." I always say, with each new one that I read, how fond I am of this series, how incredible it is, how potent it is, how dear it is to my heart. But when I read that quote I realized, to sum it up, it truly is a series that sings to me. Stealth Pun: The train was hidden beneath the training grounds the whole time. Incredibly, this seems to have been intentional on Nashira's part. The first part - the first three chapters - were already upsetting me. It's an alternate reality England. 200 years ago, some humans started becoming clairvoyant. It's unclear whether this was triggered by something or if it was something that always existed, hidden from the sight of amaurotics (her word for non-clairvoyants). Paige is a clairvoyant, and clairvoyants are hunted, tortured and killed. Your only hope of surviving (legally) in society is to give yourself to the government, who uses you to hunt and kill other clairvoyants.
