About this deal

There goes my final Jacqueline Wilson read and review. It's been a mixed bag overall. Oh well, I like at least ten of her books, and I'll be keeping them on my shelf. You wait, Vi,’ he’d say, if he thought I’d pinched the biggest cake at tea time or had one turn too many on our shared swing. That is the case today as I review her book, Midnight, a story about emotional abuse, a teenage girl’s obsessions with fairies and running away from home. Small challenge

Project Fairy' follows Mabs, an albeit irritating protagonist (hence the missing 0.75 star!) and her unconventional mother and little brother. Mabs does encompass the same trademark features of most JW protagonists, with her pale skin and mousy hair and skinny legs, but that's probably to do with her own childhood and insecurities. The illustrations are more diverse than I've seen in a JW book for a long time, which was also so nice to see.

Retailers:

Similarly though there are a fair number of escapades described, there was very little sense of tension; and the author resorts several times to having somebody say something supposedly of great importance in portentous tones but not telling us what it is, always annoying and all the more so when it turns out to be the same (less than earth-shattering) thing repeated, or is never revealed. In fairness it's undoubtedly difficult to convey today the sense of impending doom that was felt around the world at the time of the Cuban missile crisis, but then I'd argue that one shouldn't try and build a book around it.

JW has shown she's not afraid to include LBGTQ characters in her kids' books before (though in my opinion, 'Rent a Bridesmaid' contains her one true positive rep), and in 'Project Fairy', there is only the slight implication of queer content. When we first see Robin's group of five-year-old friends, a girl and a boy want him for a boyfriend. He agrees to be a boyfriend to both. Of course, this could be viewed as merely toddlers being cute (Mum is like, "Awe bless 'em!") and not understanding how relationships work. Plus the girl and boy aren't named and they don't appear again afterwards. Mab mentions her neighbours Michael and Lee twice or three times, and they might be a gay couple, but we never meet them, so am I reaching? Vampires control all of Europe, India, the Far East and the major cities in North and South America. It seems that nothing can stand in their way and that humanity will become cattle for the harvesting, the source of the blood of life. This book is about a lonely girl called Violet who loves to spend time with her brother Will. Will cares about her but he tends to scare her with some of the games they play, for instance, telling Violet to go up in the dark loft even though Violet's afraid that there may be bats. Violet especially loves to read books by her favourite author Casper Dream who she hopes to meet one day. Will seems to humour Violet when it comes to Casper Dream but generally confuses Violet with his behaviour since he found out about a family secret regarding himself. A Catholic priest with a drink problem, exiled from his parish after being accused of molesting a child.I think Will was probably devastated when she died but we had started to keep to our own bedrooms and I had no way of telling. Mum and Dad had told us that we had to keep apart.

She calls a boy out on making a sexist remark, too. Is she an avatar, a proxy, of JW trying to be feminist and sensitive nowadays after all? I can only tell when a character is not white by the illustrations. Did JW have a hand in that? In the end, she confronts her parents about the first Will. They have a little talk and soon things begin to be better after all for Violet." Wikipedia: Midnight by Jaqueline Wilson. Characters [ ] This is Edward Wilson in his best clothes: a complex plot but not convoluted, an elegantly cynic Catesby but not detestable, a good dose of conspiracy theories but nuanced enough not to be unbearable...in a word, this is a damn good espionage story, from the same mould as the early Le Carré and Deighton though less known. Me ha gustado mucho, pero debería haber sido más largo. Siento que hay algunas cosillas por cerrar todavía (y me jode no saber como avanzarán). People aren't even safe from their own kind. Human 'cowboys' enlisted by the vampires herd other humans in return for the promise of the bite of eternal life - someday.

Keep in touch

In this book, the hunters have their work cut out. The vampires have taken over the entire eastern hemisphere and are well into their assault on the New World. The mortal world needs a savior, and he is Father Joe, a priest with a past. He is helped by his niece an atheist lesbian martial artist, a killer nun, and Zev the cross-wearing rabbi. There is an uncomfortable subtext involving Jewish-Christian relations, what with the efficacy of the cross against vampires and the mass death of Jews who refused the pragmatic step of wearing a cross. Wilson is careful to say that the power of the cross symbol might pre-date Christianity. He also has a Jewish hero and Christian villians (One of the main vampires is a pedophile priest.), and Wilson's main villians, religion-wise, are people who break ethical rules as opposed to theological ones. If there's a theological standpoint in the novel, it's that religious divisions and intolerance are dangerous. I wanted to give this 4 stars, but I went with 3 because of the ending. It was good concerning a battle and there was hope for the future. But I was annoyed because two good guys died at different times in the book. I hate how pathetic Violet is. But I don't want to hate her because it'd feel like I was blaming the victim, and I admire her creative streak and love of fantasy and fairy tales. She deserves better. She deserves a happy and healthy Sapphic relationship when she's older. For this reason, I think this book falls under the same responsibility as My Sister Jodiein terms of responsibility for young children. Yes, things seemed to be looking up at the end, but I don’t feel it was solid enough. I think Will needed a lesson that could make it a more solid impression that he would behave better in the future. Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million!

Will is fifteen, nearly sixteen. He’s my brother. He’s not just my brother. He’s always been my best friend too – and my worst enemy. Project Fairy' ended up being no different. But on the whole, it is a harmless little light fantasy read. You’ve got the number of the hotel just in case?’ said Mum. ‘It’s by the phone. Of course, in a real emergency you’d better call the police.’ With good books under her belt, I was surprised to come across this book, Midnight. It doesn’t read like a Wilson book at all. Jacqueline Wilson wrote her first novel when she was nine years old, and she has been writing ever since. She is now one of Britain's bestselling and most beloved children's authors. She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather. More than forty million copies of her books have been sold.

It is also odd for Wilson as she usually writes strong and stubborn characters born from abuse, abandonment or neglect. In this way, Violet doesn’t grow and appears flat despite having a rounded character at the beginning. Will
