About this deal

Molding pastes increase body but are almost completely opaque and some have additives to give them unique textural effects.

In this video we demonstrate how to hand laminate a mould using our EG160 High Temperature Epoxy Tooling Gelcoat and our EMP160 High Temperature Epoxy Mould Making Paste. The resultant mould can be used for out-of-autoclave (OOA) Pre-preg use as well as other applications where high temperature tooling may be needed. The acrylic gels and mediums we’ve been reviewing work beautifully as archival collage adhesives. Match the weight of your paper to the weight of the gel. For example, if you’re going to glue a thin paper, use polymer medium. A regular-weight paper would take soft gel, and a heavyweight paper would need a heavyweight gel. I prefer to use gloss gels when gluing because they dry the clearest. I can always alter the final sheen by adding a layer of gloss, semi-gloss or matte. A compatible high temperature release agent, such as Easy-Lease, should always be used. Always follow the correct post-cure procedure before using the mould at elevated temperature. It was opaque but still slightly more transparent than I expected as you can see from the swatch on the left. To start the styling process, grab a dime-sized dollop of hair paste. Then, start activating and warming it up by rubbing it in between the palms of your hands; there should be no clumps. If further paste is required, you can add more later. You don’t want to start off with too much product, as this will potentially ruin the desired result.

2. Handy Art Modeling Paste Medium

I thought the finished effect was very striking, and was surprisingly absorbent, which could be a great advantage compared to other mediums. I felt the paste layer, over a dried dark acrylic paint swatch, was really effective, as the dark under paint showed through clearly. Filling or filleting tight corners or complex details on moulds before laminating with compatible epoxy resin and reinforcement.

A choice of epoxy mould making kit sizes is available. The regular sized kit contains materials to make a sufficiently strong mould of about 30cm x 30cm, (depending on the shape of the mould) whilst the large version of the kit contains materials to make a mould of around 60cm x 60cm. SHOP NOW Modeling Paste and Embossed Textures Left: Modeling paste. Right: Embossed texture made with modeling paste. For this tutorial, we are making a mould of some bonnet vents so we can eventually make carbon fibre versions of the vents using an OOA pre-preg. The pattern was pre-prepared using the original vents, our Fluted Signboard to make the Baseboard/flanges and the Soft Filleting and Filling Wax to fill the gaps in the vent and edges. Several applications of Easy-Lease Chemical Release Agent were applied before the pattern was then ready for the mould making process. Doing a wash of colour over a thin layer of beads seems just as effective as mixing a transparent colour in.

1. Golden Artist Colors Molding Paste

It was very difficult to make it smooth and show up tool marks very distinctly. It would be very useful if you wanted to create distinct levels within a piece. EMP160 is designed for use with with EG160 High Temp Epoxy Tooling Gelcoat. When applying the paste onto the gelcoat, a fresh 'wet' application of EG160 gelcoat should be used to 'couple' the paste to the gelcoat. See technical datasheet for full details. Lightening colors. Light modeling paste has a unique quality that’s very handy. Mixing modern colors with white tends to yield pastels, but light modeling paste lightens colors without making them dull. In the sample image above, I mixed quinacridone magenta mixed with light modeling paste on the left; on the right, I mixed the same paint with titanium white. I used equal amounts of paste and paint. Combo Exercise: Light Modeling Paste and Iridescent Bronze Paint Light modeling paste and Golden iridescent bronze acrylic paint creates a beautiful finish. Dries to a hard, stiff film, making it useful for priming canvases if stiffness is required. It can be used as a rabbit skin glue alternative. GAC 500 It was easy to skim the top of the surface with a wet palette knife, to decrease the texture with both the pure paste and also the paste that had been mixed with acrylic. I was surprised at how smooth you could make the surface.
