Description

The following year, Roger Boylan wrote that the novel is "the most thought-provoking" of McEwan's books and that it deserved the Booker Prize more than Amsterdam (1998). A fairly interesting read, most similar in his oeuvre (at least of the 15 I’ve read so far) to The Child in Time.

For Jeremy, it is a matter of refracting certain experiences in his life through June's prism, examining them with Bernard's more scientific lens, and comparing the two.

When both of them are members of the Communist Party, they agree on everything, and their fundamentally different ways of looking at the world do not come into conflict until later on.

He has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction numerous times, winning the award for Amsterdam in 1998.

Jeremy was orphaned at the age of eight when his parents were killed in a car accident, and he has spent the time leading up to his early adulthood looking for a place to belong and way to feel cared for.The novel is evidently intended to tip the reader backwards and forwards between these two irreconcilable credos.
