Description

Colin Gumbrell took over as Everyman setter in 2014 or thereabouts, and I think his puzzles are a little bit harder than the previous ones. I send my very best wishes to Colin Gumbrell at this time, as I’m sure do crossword enthusiasts everywhere. Yes, it’s certainly better than last week (which isn’t difficult), but not really up to Colin’s standard. The phrase is used in legalese to mean 'the reasonable person', and has gone into the language to mean 'the man in the street', a modern Everyman. I read somewhere (probably on the fifteensquared blog, which I find very useful) that there was a lot of grumbling when Colin Gumbrell started.

Because of the time of year, there is a bit of a fireworks theme and 4dn and 9dn don’t rhyme, as in the past, but are related in their subject matter. If I saw any one of those clues in a daily puzzle in the Guardian, I might raise an eyebrow, but I wouldn’t think there was anything seriously wrong.I mush prefer the fermented bean curd, Chau, which tastes of blue cheese and the Vietnamese use as a dip. As an American, I was unfamiliar with the expression LOSE ONE’S RAG, but I did know what happened with the Sun, so I was able to guess it.

Well after yesterday's mauling by Kite (DNF) I was ready for a more gentle offering from Everyman but it took a good hour to finally complete. When I came back to cryptic crosswords again recently after a long hiatus, I started doing the daily puzzles in the Guardian. After seeing your description of this puzzle, I went and did it and also went back to try some previous Everymans. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. MacNutt – who was a stickler for fairness and precision in his clues – must be turning in his grave. Everyman 4027 6D (4,3) Languish with idiot having assembled something for pasta sauce : -I-E / -U- 15D Not finishing various starters of Italian endivea, dressed like some tomatoes (3,5)S-N/-R-E- thanks in. The pairs of words are clued in such a way that the definition part relates to the full word, but the cryptic indication relates only to the part not involved in the collision, i. I didn't spot any rhyming pairs and was a tad disappointed that 1a wasn't put to better use and used as a possible theme. Spine lightly rubbed at ends and edges, small black mark to front (possibly ink); pages lightly tanned, binding sound. A trickier than usual Everyman but not so much so that it would cause too many problems, as there are lots of anagrams and primary letters etc.e. standard cryptic puzzles) have been attempted, though almost all have at least one word blank; 5 of the 'Ximenes' puzzles are completely blank, the remainder being solved in varying degrees (but none completely); the previous owner clearly did not stoop to looking at the solution pages! Thanks for the blog, I also thought it was BRAS(s) , two very long complete anagrams for Jay’s list. In case you’re wondering the reason it gives Cardiff as my address is that (a) I still have a house there and (b) I’ve had some problems with things being delivered to Ireland from the UK and (c) I recently found a stash of sticky address labels with the Cardiff address on which saves the hassle of writing my address out on each entry.
