Arrangement

The main premise of this cookbook is that the recipes are easy and cheap to make. However, you are likely to find that this is not always the case. Some recipes require quite a lot of ingredients and may take a bit of time. There are more recipes than you can imagine. There's even "Parole Cheesecake" and "Ding Dong Cake". Hugh Amano and Sarah Becan have created a beautiful work of art which makes cooking ramen at home fun and reveals the story and history of one of Japan’s most iconic dishes. Joseph and I greatly enjoyed reading this book together, tho I think some of the vocabulary went a little over his head. We were both more than a little hungry after finishing it. I only wish I'd had instant ramen handy to help assuage our cravings for the dish -- tho even now as I type, I'm still thinking about making myself a bowl! The Stories run the gamut: interesting, violent, serious, heartwarming, appalling, and humorous. Each story will open your eyes to an element of life behind bars. I was actually interested in each short story. This interesting book combines the ramen-inspired recipes from the prison and the bittersweet stories from behind the bars - and it makes for a fascinating read. In between recipes, you find tales about living in prison from an ex-con. The stories are often harrowing and are sure to make you think twice about a life of crime. They are first-hand accounts of life in prison that will scare even the most hardened criminal straight. Ivan Ramen: Love, Obsession, and Recipes from Tokyo’s Most Unlikely Noodle Joint is a memoir meets cookbook about a New Yorker living in Japan. This book made me feel. Their lives are awful. The punishment for crime is supposed to be loss of liberty, not being sent to an institution that will rob them of their dignity and punish them in completely inhumane ways without any means of defending themselves. In effect, running a lawless society - a society not subject to the laws that sent them there. Overall: I'm still scared to give it as a gift for fear of being offensive, BUT I will definitely be buying it for a few high school grads I know who have never been to prison but will most likely be living off Ramen for a couple of years. stars. My middle child brought this home from school yesterday because it is HIGHLY relevant to our interests. Full review tk at TheFrumiousConsortium.net.
