The story works both as a whodunit thriller and as a painfully real examination of unhealthy human and family dynamics. The book's structure takes us back and forth in time as Mackenzie watches current events play out at the funeral home but is also whisked back to revisit critical moments of her past when fateful decisions set her on a seemingly inevitable path to unhappiness and heartbreak. Maura’s inner dialogue had me laughing and also portrayed such accuracy for dating in the mid twenties- slightly awkward and sarcastic demeanor. While Darla sounds like a sassy teenager and refers to herself as a "dead white girl," she realizes she can't move on until everyone she loves lets her go.

Definitely realistic portrayal of that phase of life, trying to figure it all out while everyone around you seems to have it all together! This particular silence is an appreciation of the surroundings: the old-growth forest, the willow-lined creek and "a haze of coastal mountains. As someone who recently moved to WA, I enjoyed the references to Seattle-specific beers and neighborhoods that I have been in the process of exploring.

This book is a wonderful and articulate summary of many writings and views on the conundrum of the privileged mother who knows she cannot have it all, if "ït all" includes being as present a mother and wife as she feels she needs to be. I love reading her captions and hearing her stories, and thought "If I like reading her Instagram captions so much I should probably try her books.

I love audio books, so actually reading this, I can’t emphasize this enough: It’s beautiful, a story and journey that kept me curious and wanting more. We uncover important clues about what might have happened to her as we accompany her on this journey of questionable decisions, abuse, and psychological gamesmanship. Somewhere in Between is a spellbinding read that will leave you pondering your own reality for weeks to come. Niki has hit the nail on the head - the dilemma a woman faces in the 'choices' she has regarding family vs career fulfilment. Cut down in the prime of her life, she's faced with the reality that she's no longer among the living.

She walks the land in silence and sits in silence with the tenant who lives in a cabin on the ranch: Virgil Blue. The descriptions of the physical beauty of Chilcotin country are so exact, so gorgeous that I wanted to drive up there tomorrow. I highly recommend this book for those who enjoyed Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones or mysteries/thrillers, especially those with a paranormal bent. The story felt genuine, and the conclusion was one I figured out, but I wasn’t quite sure of the how. We are whisked back and forth between the funeral, and the past, some distant and then moving forward to more recent events until we come to the day she died.
