About this deal

If you’re curious about the story just read a plot synopsis, cuz it’s not terrible, and possibly even sweet, it’s probably just not worth your time. It's something she never would have risked, if it weren't for a renewed glimmer of hope that her lost fiancé, Jack, may not have died during the storm as she previously believed. Then at the end after 3/4 of the book being about how dangerous and polluted outside was, they end up walking for days in an apparently less polluted Scotland. After a microplastic storm devastates the world and leaves Katie and her five-year-old son Harry as two of the few survivors in England, they must learn to live in isolation.

In a world very close to our own, a mother and her young son desperately fend for themselves in the confinement of their one bedroom flat. The more recent ones I've read focused on hurricanes and flooding, so it was a fresh change to bring plastics into the mix. The emotionally wrenching story of a mother’s fight to save her young son as they struggle across a toxic and hostile world. We learn about Kate’s possibly stalling career and Leo’s plan to apply to acting schools against his mother’s wishes. Charlotte Mendelson, author of The Exhibitionist With hauntingly beautiful descriptions of the natural world, this challenging novel is tough and memorable. Many of the survivors she meets along the way are menacing, and she struggles to trust even those who deserve it, like Andy and Sue, an older couple who have taken up together after losing their families in the storm. An exhilarating debut novel, tracing the harrowing journey of a mother and son fighting for survival and a future in a world ravaged by environmental disaster • “ Not Alone kept me breathless with tension… [A] gripping adventure story. I possibly could have tolerated all this as a perfectly mediocre three star read if it hadn’t been so long, but the fact that it just dragged on and on and on, holy fuck. Heartbreaking and dramatic, it was a little slow pacing with too much dwelling and details in some points and not enough in others. journey to a very distant location she knows nothing about to find her fiancee, ostensibly because she doesn't want her kid to be alone. Katie ventures out in risky scouting missions for food to ensure their survival, resulting in a chance encounter with a group of survivors putting she and Harry at risk. We’re going to need that kind of hopeful grit if we’re to survive our own environmental catastrophe.
