About this deal

Kubrick's 1987 war classic, Full Metal Jacket, earns itself a stellar native 4K release, affording fans the perfect excuse for a likely long-overdue rewatch.

Those sound effects during some of the more action-packed moments of the film definitely will give your subwoofer its share of “action” so-to-speak and leave you feeling somewhat immersed. All four people seem to have had a different experience on the set of the film and working with Kubrick, but after the boot camp sequence, two of the four people are no longer heard. One of those having the hardest time adjusting to things at boot camp here is a guy a bit out of shape that the drill Sergeant awards the nickname of “Pvt. Although, in my case, even when I told them 40 years ago, I knew they were distasteful (I stopped telling them before I graduated from high school. has already done an outstanding job, releasing the 4K versions of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining, so it's no exception that Full Metal Jacket receives the same treatment.Natural film grain is much more pronounced with a much higher level of clarity than previous editions. Once we hit Da Nang, again the palette appears to be fairly normal for Vietnam war movies, while HDR enjoys some more vibrant greens as well as the warmer climate, but it's only once the fires and flares erupts that we are really wowed by what this new 4K presentation can do, delivering some absolutely stunning vistas, bathed in gorgeous golden orange hues and fiery reds, cast upon the impenetrably black night sky. Warner’s Ultra HD release presents the film in native 4K, newly scanned from the original camera negative by Warner Bros. First off, Full Metal Jacket isn't exactly a visually colorful film, filled with bright shining primary colors that looks like a pop music video.

The black level is solid and seems so much deeper than ever before, and bright daytime scenes look just stunning. For starters detail is excellent, promoting a cleaned up image that, but for a smattering of early shots, does not appear to have had too heavy an application of DNR scrubbing (there are a couple of mid-range shots where the faces look a little bit too clean), and still has a nice texture to it commensurate to the filming style. Later on, after boot camp, Joker will serve during Vietnam and despite working as a journalist will see his share of some action.and uses 10-bit video depth, a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG), High Dynamic Range, and is encoded using the HEVC (H. At the end, you’ll find a helpful little paid link to grab your copy and without giving anything away in the opening… You’ll definitely want to get this if you’re a fan of the film!

That’s some excellent news, knowing that the folks at Warner‘s MPI ( Motion Picture Imaging) labs worked on this restoration. Warner aren't really up to much on the extras front - notwithstanding the option to pick up a Collector's Set that comes in a pretty box with a poster, some art cards and a booklet. Effects are much more prominent in the latter half, booming with the landing of shells or exploding of mines, or the at times incessant thunderous percussion of Animal Mother's M60. Undeterred, Kubrick continued talking about the location uninterrupted as they climbed out of the car and walked back home.It is an unrelenting voyage into the lives and minds of Marines, from their arrival at training camp – shot meticulously by Douglas Milsome, with nary a hint that all of it – from the Parris Island training camp to Viet Nam – was all shot on location in Vancouver. This sound mix is definitely not what some had hoped for, but given its limitations of source material still delivers a somewhat impressive surround presentation.
