The people in this book might be going to have lived a long, long time from now in Northern California,” is how this book begins, in slippery Le Guin fashion. But considering the novel’s insistence on the interconnectedness of time and space (and people) and the centrality of the post-apocalypse it does evoke (located at the pinnacle of the novel’s unique structure), I think it’s only fair to count it here. Benedikt is just glad not to have any major mutations, and a job, which is to transcribe the “speeches” of the wasteland’s leader, which are actually plagiarized from old books, not a single one of which Benedikt has ever read.

Back in time stories are hard to do well because anything you change can effect the likeability of the story or the characters.Simpson’s fascinating ethnographic account takes us from fume-filled toll booths in the heart of India, via overworked government offices in Pakistan, to pharaonic bridges in the Indian Ocean. On the other hand, who knows; maybe forecasts, especially dire ones, get more attention than warnings. The data shows we've made so much progress on these problems, and so fast, that we could be on track to achieve true sustainability for the first time in history. This book does pose some good questions about ethics, people’s effects on the planet, climate change, etc.

The book starts sixteen years after the apocalypse (“It hardly mattered anymore what had done it—a giant meteorite, a huge volcano, or a nuclear war. Ultimately, Zeihan’s predictions of global anarchy rely on countries collectively making decisions that are utterly disastrous for themselves. This was the first book I’ve read from the author, and like many first time reads I wasn’t sure what to expect.Everyone’s favorite metafictional zombie apocalypse novel by Mel Brooks’ son, whose framing device—Brooks as agent of the United Nations Postwar Commission and his own actual/fictional survival guide, interviewing survivors—give it a polyphonic resonance. But it should be mentioned that this is also a tremendously trying read—I nearly gave up halfway through.

So we’ve got this guy who’s been alive for like 70 years in a never ending war across the universe that’s killed almost the entire human race. I really enjoyed this book that is a memoir/essay written as a series of entries in an encyclopedia. And as our threesome form a new kind of relationship, a new approach to family and love, questioning so much about the world around them, so they hope to create a space, a home, in which to live. The Strawberry Post is unfortunately not responsible for the amount of ads currently running on this site and apologises for any inconvenience this causes visitors. The End of the World Book is in turn informative, playful, erotic, imaginary, witty, perverse, charming, autobiographical, and full of wonders; the letter K, for example, begins with Kafka and ends with Freddie Krueger. What can be done by killing a single guy and his soldiers (which MC is clearly capable of) turns into a genocide.

Engaging, timely, and crucial, I am so grateful this book exists, and for the futures it will inspire. An encyclopedia of memory —from A to Z— The End of the World Book deftly intertwines fiction, memoir, and cultural history, reimagining the story of the world and one man’s life as they both hurtle toward a frightening future.

I’ve read the author’s previous book ‘The Loneliest Girl in the Universe’ and really enjoyed how gripping it was and the twists that were incorporated into it. This is a big, sweeping book about the economic, geopolitical, and technological history and future of the world. How do these flamboyant and controversial ‘roadmen’ think about their work and the future of the planet?
