About this deal

I listened to this on audio book, so that may have made a difference as to why I didn't connect that well to it. The author makes nods at various themes so subtly that it allows the reader to make their own conclusions and opinions which makes the trials and tribulations feel more personal.

I know there’ll be plenty of others out there who would love this book but it didn’t connect with me the way I thought it would. After two years of lockdowns and working from home I think a lot of people can relate to the tag line of 'Imogen has a toxic relationship with her job'. That, and the fact that the story seems to take place in an alternate universe where basic common sense is… not a thing. Hilarious and unflinchingly honest, Careering takes a hard look at the often toxic relationship working women have with their dream jobs.Exploring the exhausting push-pull of trying to pin down a career you love but that doesn't love you back, Buchanan's book is set to capture the zeitgeist as so many of us question where we're at' Stylistcareering (verb) 1. Will she wake up to the way she’s being exploited before her protege realises that not everything is copy?

Hilarious, astute and full of human truths, Careering is a compelling and thoughtful read that every woman (and man) should have on their shelves. But you hear from Imogen a lot more and I didn't feel like I got to know Harri, so I'm not sure what her character's point-of-view added to the story. The author also does a masterful job of slightly highlighting prejudice and racism in the publishing world without making it her own story (the author is a white woman). So perceptive and wise about the media, privilege, the differing but equally troubling pressures that women of all ages face, while still being moving, laugh out loud funny, and inspiring. The burnout we face then quells any sense of love we have for the job, taking what we once believed we were made for into something we dread showing up for unless we take change into our own hands. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. A great exploration of relationships with ourselves, our families, our colleagues, our past and futures, our careers, our dreams, our voices. It is not all so perfect, however, as the prose reads like a Netflix original series plagued with cringe phrases and POV switches that allowed little depth to be added to the story or its characters - that, may I add, were easy to root for despite this, as a woman who understands the pressures faced.
