Jess Phillips is refreshing, her no-nonsense, straight-forward approach aims to open politics up to all and that can only be a good thing. She captures so brilliantly the confusion of being a teenage girl, being aware of her sexuality but unaware of some men’s bad intentions. It is both rage-inducing and raucous, and Jess comes across as a woman with society's best interests at heart - and exactly the sort of person I want representing me.

She discusses online abuse and the threats she has received simply for having a political opinion and she talks about times she has been patronised for daring to think she can ‘have it all’. It was empowering to read that she feels just as threatened and insecure as the rest of us when walking into an event or standing up and speaking about something; she explains that when under threat, she tends to expand rather than contract (I tend to do this, too, my worst examples being when about to go under anaesthetic: oh, I blush! The thin cardboard envelope the book was posted in had ripped and Royal Mail had to put it in one of their plastic envelopes.How could Jess’s experience as a young women hanging out with men in Birmingham be so like my own in Batley? This book is an interesting look at what it’s like being a woman predominantly in the political sphere but the material is applicable to many other careers particularly those where a woman has dared to attempt to participate in and challenge an otherwise patriarchal career.

She certainly doesn't just slam the Tories, I didn't read this as a Tory-hating book at all, more a book about inspiring change and making a difference in the world.
