Description

Due to the series being banned in Germany, this game referred the House of the Dead series as Curien Mansion. This is carried over to future Sega Superstars titles. In addition to characters from the Sonic universe, you’ll also get a chance to play as such characters as NiGHTS, AiAi from Super Monkey Ball, Ulala from Space Channel 5, Amigo from Samba De Amigo and Beat from Jet Grind Radio. (Sonic), " Who are you, and how do you know my name?" (Shadow) and " See, I told you I could do it!" (Tails). It also feels like the team has stripped down the simulation aspect of Virtua Tennis in favor of a design that'd appeal to players who might be turned off by a realistic take of tennis. That's not to say that SEGA Superstars Tennis doesn't play like tennis; it definitely does. You can place hard shots, lobs, play the net and overhand smash the ball with a well positioned shot. You can aim your serves tight or loose to the line to ace your opponent. You can dive for an out of reach ball, even if the animation plays out the character's personality (Sonic does a forward flip instead of sliding to the ball, for example). SEGA Superstars Tennis was ported to MAC along with Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. However, SEGA Superstars Tennis was never released on PC. The Wii version of SEGA Superstars Tennis arrives stateside with one glaring omission – namely, the online mode destined to extend the replay value of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 builds is sorely absent from this incarnation. SEGA reps recently stated that there wasn't enough time to include the feature. Instead, Wii owners are able to play the title with three different control schemes – the standalone Wii remote held vertically, the standalone Wii remote held horizontally, or the Wii remote and nunchuk combo, which features waggle and seems to be the most intuitive setup, in our experience. Holding aloft its new baby, SEGA proudly stormed the gates of EG towers (we do have towers now - did you see the press release?) to give us a hands-on with a near-complete 360 build of the game, currently looking good for a mid-March release on about 97 platforms. Okay, five: 360, PS3, Wii, DS and (uhuh) PS2. "No PSP or PC?" you cry. "Where's the love?" That's meant to be a tennis joke. Minigames are included as both one-offs and part of the tournament. These include a Target-hitting game, The House of the Dead zombie killing game (hit moving zombies around a court before the timer runs out), a Space Harrier game, a Puyo Puyo game, a Virtua Cop game and a Samba De Amigo-related game. NiGHTS: All Round type - NiGHTS' Superstar state, Nightopian, grants them some Nightopians and makes the ball paraloop. When returned it teleports the returning player around the court. This "charge early" control negatively affects the game's more over-the-top arcade element: special shots. As you successfully volley the ball, you're building up your special shot represented by a star below your character's feet. When it's fully illuminated, tapping the shoulder button will activate it and enable your character's over-the-top tennis playing abilities. On the console game, the characters will perform moves that'll throw trash on the court, or teleport the opposition to remote positions. On the Nintendo DS, they're nothing but crazy shots that zig zag and corkscrew, zipping in different locations. Here's the problem: while the ball is whizzing all over the court, since the ball has a pre-determined landing position, players can simply stand in the middle of the court and start charging their swing. 90 percent of the time the player can blindly hit these shots this way, making the reason for these shots pretty much pointless. Whereas you might reasonably expect your man (slash monkey, slash hedgehog, etc) to stretch and dive to meet the ball, time after time we found ourselves punished for shots that would be considered routine in VT. Whether that's a set-in-stone gameplay decision or something being tweaked and balanced in the final stages of development was hard to say. Right now, though, SEGA Superstar Tennis definitely doesn't feel like Virtua Tennis with SEGA icons instead of grizzled professionals.

Each of the 16 characters has a special superstar alter-ego. These super abilities give them the winning edge on the court. And the less said about the stylus controls, the better – the developers included this clearly as an option and not the way to play SEGA Superstars Tennis. Skip it and play the traditional D-pad and buttons way. It works and works well. Shadow the Hedgehog: Speed type - His Superstar state, Super Shadow, makes him transform into Super Shadow. His shots are now infused with Chaos Control, teleporting the opponent across the court when they return the ball.

Space Harrier: In this minigame, the player must throw the ball against a number of series of robot, alien, machines and meteorites the constantly come time by time when difficulty increases. Super Monkey Ball: The player has to counter large balls and collect bananas and hand them into time gates before time runs out. David, Mike (March 26, 2008). "Sega Superstars Tennis - NDS - Review". Sega Superstars Tennis is the only game featuring Sonic on the PlayStation 2 that prompts the player if they would like to activate progressive scan without the need to hold down a button combination— Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Sonic Riders, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, and Sonic Unleashed all require the player to hold down and during start-up to bring up the prompt, and Sega Genesis Collection requires the player to access the Options menu to enable it.
