Bald Eagles
Iowa’s 11 lock and dams along the Mississippi River offer open water and plentiful food for wintering bald eagles. Between December and March, the Iowa eagle population grows from 500 to 3,000 birds. Check out six upcoming bald eagle watch festivals.

Scrimmage: Football in American Art from the Civil War to the Present
Opening January 21 at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, this new exhibit looks at the evolution of the sport of football as seen by generations of American artists. More than 75 works, dating from the 1850s to 2014, range from straightforward depictions to the cult of the celebrity athlete. The exhibit runs through May 14.

Effigy Mounds National Monument quarter
The U.S. Mint will launch the Effigy Mounds National Monument quarter at a ceremony in Waukon on February 7. It will be the first quarter released in 2017 and the 36th of 56 coins to be issued under the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. Effigy Mounds National Monument in Harpers Ferry includes prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds dating from 500 B.C. to 1300 A.D.
