I would consider Heroes to be one of his more under-rated books, along with Tunes for Bears to Dance To. Back in the present time, Larry resurfaces in Frenchtown, and Francis puts a pistol in his pocket and tracks him down. According to dictionaries, being a hero means to be a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. As the two men talk, Francis confesses that the true reason he went to war was because he wanted to die, and then he reveals that he witnessed the rape. Nicole Renard the one who francis falls in love with she comes from Albany , New York and Francis tell her that she's the most pretty girl from the whole world.

stars but as I couldn't give it that, I've given it 4 stars because it definitely leans more towards four than three on the star spectrum. Francis begins his story by explaining the gruesome injuries he sustained when he fell on a live grenade and saved his platoon. I really sympathised with him, and on several occasions, I just wanted to step through the pages and give him a big hug. Larry asks a question near to the end of the book that captures the book's central theme perfectly, "Does that one sin of mine wipe away all the good things?

I discovered Robert Cormier near the end of my final year of high school, the few of his books I read leaving quite the impression on me. I really enjoyed this book by Cormier - The dark theme that runs through the book is quite haunting. Just like 'Of Mice and Men', I thought that 'Heroes' was very clever, and it became more so to me the more times I read it. Heroes, published in 1998, is a novel written by American author Robert Cormier who is known for addressing darker subjects in his books for young adults. However, as is the nature of GCSE texts (and any other English Literature study texts, I should think) it's obligatory to read, re-read, and re-read again.

Nicole Renard: Nicole moves to Frenchtown from Albany and immediately becomes the subject of Francis's attention. The sense of complete loneliness and isolation Francis goes through are painful, and I felt for him and Nicole even though character development wasn’t really Robert Cormier’s strong suite, and his female characters were particularly lacking. However, his luck began to change with the arrival of Larry and the opening of the town’s new recreation center, which was dubbed the “ Wreck Center” due to its shoddy refurbishment and its bloody history as the site of a wedding that turned into a mass shooting.

This book was interesting and I thought that the characters were well introduced as we are given a lot of information for such a short book but overall it just wasn't my cup of tea.One night Larry, the first in town to enlist in the war, is home on furlough at the Wreck Center with Francis and Nicole. None of the characters were stereotypes and each character had committed good deeds and bad deeds making them neither angelic or evil. His books often are concerned with themes such as abuse, mental illness, violence, revenge, betrayal and conspiracy.

But Cormier doesn't stop there, he also highlights the disturbing contrast between Larry's celebrated violence towards enemies in combat and his reprehensible sexual violence (rape) towards Nicole, and the fact that Nicole is underaged makes this even more despicable. Robert Cormier was a journalist and author, acclaimed for his young adult novels with their uncompromising examination of contemporary issues. He decided against jumping off the chapel top, and instead lied into the army and some time in the war threw himself on top of a grenade. The quotes are lovely, and sometimes heartbreaking, but all of them memorable, which is the critical thing when you need them for an exam.

That's when you get the burning tenseness in your stomach; when you really want him to succeed, but's scared something will go awry. Throughout the book Francis's main mission is to wait for Larry LaSalle to come back to Frenchtown so he can shoot with a gun he carries in his duffel bag in revenge for LaSalle assaulting Nicole.
