I use it to clean tools and vintage items and it can take a bit longer than the advice suggests but nonetheless it does a good job my advice would be to immerse your item for a minimum of 24hrs - 48hrs and you will get really good results. I think some commercial rust removers may be citric with a corrosion inhibitor added, this makes sure the citric takes off rust but does not attack the metal at all, but I've never felt the need to use such a product, but can see why they could be useful.
